For those of you that have seen my other post regarding purchase of parts for this project: https://forum.ih8mud.com/60-series-wagons/532344-getting-started-5-3-swap-step-1-purchaseing.html

History
This is the new thread for the build up of my 84 fj60 to include a conversion to a 5.3l SBC. 8 months ago i traded an old worn out motorcycle for this moster truck with a SOA on 35's knowing it needed a little TLC. It had a little wheel well rust, really ugly worn out interior, and as the previous owner stated; "a valve job and it should run fine". Because this was basicly a free vehicle for me, it was worth the risk.

As it turned out the engine needed more then just a valve job. in fact the head was nearly new condition, but a broken rod, lifter, and cam, was the problem. Because i wanted to eventually make this a family rid and DD, i was not thrilled with dumping money into a 2f that was under powered for normal driving, and had poor MPG's. After daily research for the past 5 months and battling the temptation of a diesel conversion vs. SBC, i came up with the conclusion of a 5.3 for many reasons. Because i live in a townhouse community i could not do the swap at home because of PITA HOA. So fellow mud member and fj60 owner who is a close friend, informed me that i could use his garage when it became available. So yesterday i had my fj60 towed to his house to begin the project.

Because i am a little over my head i am thankful my friend is a gear head and capable of such a project. So with his help, garage and tools, we begin work tonight with removing my SOA axles, to begin a conversion back to SUA to lower my fj60 to a level appropriate for my family, and replacing them with stock housings that have not be cut and turn. By next Monday we will have the old engine pulled out and prepping for the 2003 5.3 with 4l60e to be put in.

I know pictures are what we all want to see, so I will add them along with video's as the project moves forward. for now i will include a picture of the vehicle from when i received it.

I am going to watch this....subscribed:clap:

So what was the reasoning behind moving to the SBC and not the diesel.

Edit: oh I see you are in the east bay... that explains it right there!!! LOL

East bay

That looks like Clayton?

Dog house is off, engine gets pulled sunday. Was hoping to get more done today but the 49ers game was more important.

update

Put many hours into the 60 this weekend. here is a review of what has been done:

-Vehicle was difficult to put on jack stands because of the SOA was so tall, but began the process of removing the old axle for the SUA conversion. (rember guys i am making a more family friendly rig, dont want to hear about going back to SUA) Picked up some used axle housings from a guy parting a stock rig and began to clean them for POR-15 paint.

-Removed front clip
-pulled 2f out
-removed t-case (internals look like they are in great condition. PO had replaced t-case and 4 speed shortly before sale)
-began clean engine bay, firewall, and underside for paint.

I have a few pictures but they are with a cell phone at night so i will post them later before this weekend.

This weekend i will be working on axles and exchanging components from the old to the new while replacing bearings and such. Need to have the new axles and suspension finished so i know what kind of alignment i am dealing with for the new engine placement. I will also be installing t-case and transmision to the new motor.

Upgrading an already upgraded truck! 5.3 damn!

Sorry guys! i have been off the radar and have not provided any pictures. they are coming. When we started the project we had to start outside because the SOA lift was to high to get in the Garage. I was waiting to pick up the SUA axles and pulled the engine. Here in Northern CA we didnt see any rain since OCT, so it seemed safe. as soon as engine was pulled it rained. In fact it rained for nearly a week. regardless it slowed us down on the axle swap. axle housing swap is complete, but in doing so i found i needed a rebuild on other components which is near complete. full SUA swap should be complete friday night, and will provide pictures. the lower stance should alow us to get fj60 into the hanger to dig in on swap.

Question about fuel system:
i have inline fuel pump, and the aeromotive filter with the cutoff lever, to follow with the corvette filter regulator; what shoudl i do about fuel lines?

what shoudl i do about fuel lines?

Whatever your budget allows

I would honestly stay away from any rubber lines at all cost. this includes pushlock, and most common steel brained lines. The alcohol found in modern automotive fuel is known to "weap" through rubber lines.

For this reason the best setup is metal hard lines... followed by teflon steel braided.

Nascar teams use teflon... you might get away with the stock lines, dont know if anyone can confirm this.

New ride height with sua conversation and axle plus knuckle rebuild. Sorry for the night shot, but much happier with lower vehicle.

looking for more imput on fuel lines. can i marry the old lines from the tank to the lines needed to attach to the aeromotive pre-filter, then conect to the external pump, and then what to the engine? i see the rubber lines are not going to work because of "weap", and willing to purchase whatever needed, but not knowlegable on what can hook up to tank, pumps, and filters much less what size i need.

I did the push lock stuff from summit and was really happy. Will you be running e-85?
