Hey guys I got my 89 fj62 a little over a week ago and ever since I first put it into 4wd the indicator light hasn't gone off. I have checked several times that I am in high 2 and that the hubs are free and that the high4 button is off. its just annoying me. Does anyone have any suggestions on what I should do.

The sender in the xfer case is probably stuck. You should be able to check it from under the truck. I can't remember if you have to drop the skid plate to reach it.

Does your front driveshaft spin freely? If it does not turn freely when the switch is in the "out" position then the Vacuum Switching Valve (VSV) Solenoid is toast. This is a common issue on the 88 and 89 FJ62's. In the FAQ section there is a part number and a qucik fix for around $20.

If the driveshaft does turn freely and your 4WD button is in the out position with the light on then as the previous post implies, the sensor in the tcase may be acting up. I believe is is on the passenger side near the shifting mechanism. The actual sensor is on the side pointing out towards the rear passenger side door. It is easy to spot as the shifting fork goes into the top of the tcase close by.

You need to come back home and park it in the driveway, then the light will go out.

It's been since 93 that I had to work on my. Can't remember what it was doing now but there are two switches. The one further back puts the transfer in 4WD when in low range. The one towards the front is the one that bring the light on the dash on. If the front drive shaft spins free look at the front switch. If it's lock look at the one towards the back. If you need pictures I have a spare clean transmission/transfer set I could take a picture of.

I am having a similar issue with my 89 fj62, that is the 4wd indicator light stays illuminated when 4wd button is in "out" position.

If I understand the previous replies correctly, I should be able to turn the front drive shaft by hand if the vsv solenoid is functioning correctly?

If I cannot turn the front drive shaft, then 4wd is still engaged via the transfer case, but would only transmit power to the wheels when the hubs are locked?

I replied to your other thread where you have a more in-depth description but yes, everything you just said is correct.

Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids up by the hood cowling that run down to the actuator at the transfer case. I recently had my 4wd light staying on (actually engaged at the t-case) due to one of the vacuum lines popping off.
