So recently I have been looking at the toyota diesels and have been trying to find one with a 1KD-FTV and it seems that the Hilux Surf KDN215 has what I'm looking for. However, something seems off to me because these seem to be unpopular. Searching only turns up parts and Russian reviews of the car, and it seems like everyone sticks to the older JDM models. Does anyone have any idea why this is?

They need to be 15 years old to import to Canada, so that brings you to 2002, which was still 3rd gens. You'll start to see them coming over shortly, you could be one of the 1st.

Back in the day, I had one of, if not the 1st 3rd gen Hilux Surf's imported to Canada, an early '96 SSR-G.

The 4th gens are quite a bit bigger than the 3rd gens, 1KD's were available in the later 3rd gens if it's just that specific engine you're looking for. The larger size could be a plus or a minus, depending on what you're looking for.

The motor is 1KD-FTV (not FTE). Importing to Canada it needs to be 15 years old or more, so they are probably just starting to bring these trucks over. That engine seems to have replaced the 1KZ-TE around 2002 for the most part. I think you'd be looking at the KDJ90, KDJ95, KDJ120, KDJ125 Prado or KDN185, KDN215 Surf. I think in those years the Prado and Surf are very similar. So you could look at either/or.

Haha, I was writing my post while you were writing yours. Sorry to repeat a lot of what you said.

My bad, that was a mistype on the engine type. I have my eye on the 4th gen Surf because it seems like it's very similar to the 4Runner of the same year body-wise, which could be useful if I'm replacing parts. It's been fairly hard to find what models have the 1KD though because there I haven't found a list as of yet so thank you for listing those

FWIW, the 3rd gen 4Runner and Hilux Surf shared a lot of parts as well, that's not specific to the 4th gens.

Yeah I know, it just seems like the 4th gen body style is more similar in some ways than the 3rd gens. For example, the front basically looks the same where there were some differences between the 3rd gens. Not that it matters all too much though
