4runner calliper conversion worthiness?

The main reason I'm looking into the swap now is b/c my current calipers are shot so why not upgrade at the same time.

Also, are you the mark from NJ that i have wheeled with a few times? grey FJ62? wotovich or something of that nature? If so, hows it going, if not, sorry!

Nope. I'm the other Mark W. ;)

Wasilla Alaska.

I noticed a major increase right off the bat but I did not like the excessive, at least to me, pedal travel so I put on the 80 series MC. Now it is about perfect.

Mark W.,
Good to finally have you on the board. I was wondering why you'd never joined up!? Good attempt at anonymity, too. Sure kept me guessing! I'm interested to see how others will react to your posts! ;)

Kev,
The swap works fine with the 7/8" bore master. You had a bad master cylinder. Otherwise there is no way the pedal should randomly drop like it did. If you like a firm pedal with minimal travel, go for the 1" bore, if you want a somewhat softer pedal with more travel, go for the 7/8".

I just took your old master cylinder apart and its certainly bad. There is sand sized rust particles on the paper towel I fished out with my finger and the front piston is physically stuck in the bore. all the dark stuff is rust and dirt. I guess you got some water contamination...

Thanks Brett!

I stand corrected guys!

Thanks for checking that MC for me as well! Good thing we swapped it out before something ulgy happened! Pretty cool that an upgrade i did actually discovered a bad part and here i am just thinking my pedals too soft! Thanks

I also used my stock calipers as cores and the parts person didnt even blink! The calipers i bought (part # above) cores were almost as much as the calipers themselves so it saved me a bunch of $

Also, Do ALL 60's have prop valves? I just noticed that mine did and never heard of these mentioned befoer when doing rear discs!

Thanks

I just picked up a set of calipers- pretty reasonable if you ask me.

LINK to auction

I need to bleed the system anyway.

Good deal Moston Bangler, uh I mean Boston Mangler. Ive heard for whatever reason that you can be pretty safe as long as your getting IFS calipers.

What year skinner calipers will work and which year is best if there is any difference?

I am about to do a knuckle rebuild and will be putting on new slotted drilled rotors that I bought cheap from a guy who sold his 62 before he got around to installing them.

I have a set of new OEM front pads but will trade them off if I need different pads for the skinner calipers. I am going to add extended brake lines are the fittings different for an FJ62 and the skinner calipers?

Thanks

David

Im running an FJ80 master cylinder and power booster. Four runner calipers and vented disks all around. The truck stops like an f-in race car with 42" swampers on it!

Hey HZJ60, how did you set up the rear callipers? Did you manufacture brackets to suit or did you buy them from some secret place I don't know about? If you manufactured them I dont suppose you still got he plans lying around? Maybe Ill chuck my old front callipers on the back...

Dunbar- where'd you get the handle? I have an uncle who named his ranch Dunbar... after the family ranch in New Zealand.

anyway... do a search for "caliper" on the 60's forum, you'll find all the information you'll need.

Dunbar is my last name. Scottish origin but my ancestor came to the colonies before 1650.

I will search this forum for caliper just thought this thread was a good place to ask.

Thanks,

Dunbar

I thought about using a completely baseless handle. But I realized that anyone who corresponds with me much or reads my blatthering on the LCML would eventually recognize my style anyway. ;)

I've been pretty satisfied with the mailing list format which is about the only reason I haven't been more evident in the web based forums. I've been reading some but just got to registering so I can pariticpate.

Later,

The first year or two of the IFS trucks didn't have the upgraded calipers on the 4 cylinder trucks. But the later ones did (all of the trucks, not just the 4Runners). Ask for '89 to be safe. Or ask for '89 V6 to be absolutely safe.

Oh gawd... I can't spell half of the names of the cities. North Island mostly.

Some in Rotorua, some in ophonga (I know I butchered that one)...
