Tried to shift HZJ77 t-case into 4L today but no go. Stick moves into position but when put in gear an unpleasant grinding noise is all I get :-{ It did mesh for an instant on a subsequent attempt but promptly popped out and again with the grind. Worked fine up until today. No problems in high gear. Any suggestions?

The lever moves a rod and then a fork in the transfercase....
Something is stopping you moving the lever to fully engage the gear hence the grinding noise as the teeth pass each other by...
It may be as simple as some obstruction under the truck preventing the lever fully moving.
Or a bent rod, or loose connection....
Otherwise the ball and spring detent could be rusty and stopping it from moving....Or worst case something bent in the transfercase....
