I am thinking of going the diesel route. I am not really sure which way to go but am leaning towards the 4bt. I noticed that my company has a mobil air compressor and the motor is a 4bta. Would something like this work in my 60 or is it a different type of 4bt. Any help here would be much appreciated.

Howdy! Not sure, but I would think that an engine for that application would be setup for running under heavy load at a given speed. It's not setup for accelerating, and such. Might be able to mod it to run OK, but might take some serious diesel talent to do that. John

hmmm
I will follow this post, interested to know about that.
Maybe get the model # from the engine and call that manufacturer to see about specs and all... then compare to a street driven version?

A Generator diesel has a different IP control for running at a constant speed to maintain frequency. We put a kubota 2 cyl from a little genset in a sailboat for propulsion and had to change the IP. Could compressor have this same issue? Otherwise everything was fine...

i've got a 4BTA here from an industrial application waiting to go into an 80 series, mine will go through the rpm range nicely and like the others said you might have to massage or swap the pump and a few other things to make it right. Get the CPL and engine number on the tag and do a search.
Its a great engine!
Good luck.

i'm going to reccomend another site for you to try...

4btswaps.com

pretty much anything you want to know about swapping a 4bt into any sort of rig can be found there.huge tech section.

Appreciate the advice. I will check out that web site. The hour guage on the compressor is only at about 1200 (my wifes suburban has 2600 hours and only 65k miles not sure if that has much . I have not recieced a final price on it but he is leaning towards 1500 to 1800. There is something wrong with the actual compressor. The motor starts easy and runs well. I am not sure if that price is good or not . More research.
once again thanks
