4BD1T into FJ60 Fit Issues

I'm running a smittybuilt in my 60 and it fits pretty good, although it is fairly wide and crowds my e-brake handle. But I have 80 series electric seats so that may be part of the width issue.

What's the fit problem with yours?

Don

The studs in the front aren't long enough to get through the holes I've made. There is ankther crossmember that is closer to the shift lever that the console is resting on instead, so it's titled up (front is up, rear is down). That cross member sits almost perfectly in the radio space but it lifts one side.

I think the lengths aren't too different. I didn't see that there was one without the radio until after I got it. Did yours fit easily into the location? Except for the hand brake area being tight.

Yes, it fit up pretty easy as I remember. Took me about an hour as I recall to install. Mine came with a big riser block for the rear that screws on and makes it just about level, albeit slightly nose high. Did yours come with that riser?

I remember mine resting level on that front crossmember and I think I actually bolted to that crossmember for the front mounts on mine.

hey Mitch, when you put your flywheel on, how did you get the output piece off the back of the motor to get the flywheel bolted up? Got the adapter plate on but can't get that little snout off the back of the moter.

Oh yeah, I forgot all about that. Real PITA!!! I ended up getting a piece of large all thread that would fit through the hole. Welding a bolt to that piece on the crankshaft. Then using an impact driver to drive the all thread into the hole and drive the piece out. Does that make sense? It took some doing and quite a lot of torque.

Yeah it did, but using that it will sit even further away from the bolt holes in the back and the studs in the front. I will take more of a look next week.

Ps not being able to multiquote on the phone is challenging.

Well didn't get much done today. Got the adapter plate put on but that PITA snout is driving me crazy. Called it a day and gonna hit it again tomorrow.

I might have some pictures of what I did but I won't be back home until Monday.

That part is pressed into the hole. So I welded a nut onto the piece and then a nut onto the end of a piece of all thread and pressed it out by driving the all thread into the hole.

That's cool Mitch, Think I have the idea on what to do now. May get to it first thing in the morning and I will let you know how it goes. Thanks again for the help.

Fill the the hollow crank adapter and the end of the crank with grease. Find a bolt or steel rod that fits into the center hole as tight as possible. Hit bolt or rod with BFH = Hammer! Hydraulic pressure works wonders! This works and it's easy to do. I used this method on mine.

Ryan, jsut remembered something. Make the mount to put the clutch slave cylinder on before you have the drive train mounted.

How is your clutch working Mitch? Have you had any problems out of it since you have been driving it? Got my engine, trans, and t-case all bolted up and ran into one problem when trying to trial fit it between the frame. Not enough room right now with the stock brake booster and the stock turbo.

Hey Doug, went with a little bit of a different method. Took a 3/4 inch nut and welded it to the front of it, then ran a long bolt in until it pushed out. Your method sounds like it would work also. Thanks for another way of doing this. The old saying goes, there's more than one way to skin a cat !!!!!!!!!!!

It's been working fine. I want to get under there and check it at some point; make sure the bracket I made is still holding up.

I ran into problems with clearance there too....ended up making a spacer for the brake booster. So far that has worked really well. If you need a coupling nut for the brake booster to brake pedal rod, I have a few extras.

Trip to Berkeley

So last weekend I drove to Berkeley from SoCal to see some friends; I decided to take Blue for a check out drive. Here is the story.

The drive up on Friday was long as usual, but went without any issues. I had just reinstalled my power steering pump with the new flange, so the power steering fluid was needing topping up every so often...no big deal. Saturday it rained, hard. I have a leak somewhere and water is getting into the drivers side footwell; didnt know about that. It was obvious that I need a defroster, so I need to get the heater fixed. Everything so far had been great. The clutch had been a bit hard to push and gears not always going in like it had been. I need to check the clutch slave cylinder mount that I made to make sure it is holding up.

So Sunday is the drive home. I leave around 2 or 3pm to make sure I can get home if something happened....this was a good plan. I stop in Atascadero to get some food and when I get back to Blue, I notice that one of my belts is on the ground under the truck. This gave me pause. I pop the hood and notice that the AC compressor is hanging off of its mount. The nut has disappeared somewhere on the 101 it seems. Alright....find a new nut....I dont have a spare and dont have one that I can pull from somewhere else. So I figure that the compressor, which isnt connected to anything yet, must have been on there for a period before it fell off, so I mount it back as best I can. I cant take it off because the dip stick tube is mounted to it. I then drive the three miles or so to Home Depot. In the HD parking lot, I remove the bolt and go get a nylock one....good plan. So when I am putting the bolt back on and getting it all back, I have to move compressor around quite a bit...it is close to the exhaust pipe.

I start driving.

I then start to smell something burning. My first thought, since I was bit flustered with dealing with the AC was that it was someone else. So I drive a bit further but I can still smell it, ok time to pull off. I pull into a Holiday Inn since they have overhead light and get out of the truck which is smoking. Awesome. I see that oil is everywhere. I get some guys to help me push Blue into a parking spot and start figuring this out.

So remember that dip stick pipe? Yeah, turns out I pulled it out of the engine, so when the engine was turning, oil was spraying everywhere. ****. So I need oil. Now, I didnt bring oil since I had never had a problem with oil yet. Wrong plan. It is too late for an auto-parts store and the kmart (no walmart) is 5 miles away and I have no car. So I am trying to figure this out and calling friends back home who can come help. Someone then mentions that gas stations have oil. Now, this is something that I simply didnt know. When I go to a gas station, I get gas (now Diesel!) and maybe a candy bar, not oil; so this was a pleasant surprise to me.

I bum a ride to a gas station and get some 20W-50 (I have used 15w-40) and put in two quarts into Blue and off I go! I did get home a few hours later than planned and with quite a bit more knowledge under my belt, so it was a great trip!

Driving the truck was easy and it drove wonderfully. It feels great at 70-75 and go 22+ mpg for the trip. I would like to get cruise control though.

In other news, the truck is registered as a diesel with the great state of California!

I also have some 4+ sliders that I need to weld on and install the u-bolt flip kits and my Front Runner roof rack. The smittybuilt console is not in yet...I am blanking on how to get it mounted; I am considering getting the non-radio one if someone is interested in my radio one. There are a few places with exposed metal that I need to paint. And a few places where I have mounted things that need to be reinforced to help reduce metal fatigue. I need to fix the horn (anyone have a .22LR shell they can send me?) and I'd like an FJ62 steering wheel; mine is shedding stuff when it gets wet from my hands when it rains.

I also need to sell/get rid of a bunch of stuff from the build: bumpers (front and rear) in good shape, 2F starter, alternator, fan clutch, igniter with coil, a bunch of mud flaps...a few other things. I need to post it to the classifieds, but if someone wants stuff, let me know, I will get rid of it cheap (or trade for stuff...I want spare axle shafts and birfs) and its even better if you can come get it!

To fix:
- leak into driver footwell
- heater (defroster)
- AC mount
- AC belt

To look into:
- Clutch slave cylinder mount
- Cruise(r) Control

Lessons:
- nylock nuts are good when stuff goes shacky-shacky
- Bring Oil.
- Dont Panic
- Diesel Land Cruisers are awesome!

To do:
- u-bolt flip kits
- mount/weld on sliders
- finish smittybuilt install
- sell stuff
- mount Front Runner Roofrack

To get:
- FJ62 steering wheel.

That is awesome Mitch. How long of a trip was that (miles)? Good to see that you got 22mpg. The pictures of the shroud look good. Just find out how much shipping will be and get back with me. I will more than likely take it. Think that I am going to get my axles done before going any further with the engine. I don't think that I will have oil pan to diff issues, I am going SOA. Picking up my radiator today, got it leak checked and all cleaned up and painted. Think that I will go to the local pick and pull to get a slave cylinder. Also going to go ahead and order a new clutch and pressure plate.

It was maybe 650 miles total. I will try to get the shipping quote this weekend.

I forgot to add above, the fan weren't working the entire trip;fuse was blown. But with the nice big radiator, it was never an issue....will be if and when it gets hot out. Need to add that to the fix it list above.
