ok so i know stock h7815 are 28 tall and my Swampers are 33( well real close)

so ....
33 div 28 = 1.17
3.70 X 1.17= 4.32

so since there are no 432 ... 410 are a o/d and 456 are u/d. would the 456's on road be that bad... i like the sound of the off road peformance but i do drive it to the trail any one have 456's and 33's and how does it drive. for next to nothing more i can have the 456's now ... think i should just shut up and do it ???? or stay with 410... i found both set up in drop outs ready to run and for $200.00 more i can have the 456's

Run the 4.10's. You will be fine with the 33's.

The 456 will take away from the top end speed, as the engine really does not like 4 grand all day long ;)

Will you be setting up the gears yourself? Are you figuring in the cost of new bearings?

no i found both in good shape set up in drop outs and i worked off the price of the 4.10 with the guy .. and yesterday he told me about the 456's and for $200.00 more i can have them ... and well i just wanted more gear and i allready want 35's anyway ... so i was just wondering how it would drive ... and the cruiser isnt my daily but i do drive it to the trail head...

Ok, so do your math figuring on 35's instead of 33's...

If that is the tire you are going to run, then I would spend the extra cash on the 456's.

Good luck!

4.625 so then there and o/d again... :D

so i guess what i was wondering is anyone running this set up and how do you like it i know its better for 35 but i have new 33 swampers to ware out first :-\

I run 4.11's in my fj60, with 33's, I think unless your running a 5 speed the 4.11's are just about perfect, the 4.56's would make it scream on the highway. I found the swap from 3.70 to 4.11 to make a bigger differercnce then the #'s would lead you to beleive. So IMOP the 4.10's are just right.

35's.........prolly 4.56

If I ever put lockers in my FJ62 I'll go to 4.56 gears. The 4.11 I have now is just ok with 33's (really 32", as they are BFG A/T's) - I have to downshift quite a bit going uphill at 50mph. It's not enough of a problem right now to make me spend the $, but if I'm in there for lockers anyway then I'll make the switch.

I agree on a 62 because you have the OD of 4th gear.....60's don't.

dont know that the 35's will happen any time soon .... and thanx for the input pimp ... i guess the 410 it will be i'll use the $200.00 else ware

I run 4.10s and 35s in my FJ60. I have to run 3rd gear up steep grades but I don't care. I can do 80 on the flat areas of the highways. I figure it's like this: go 50 mph up steep grades in third gear with 4.10s and 80 mph on flat in 4th, or go 50 mph up steep grades in 4th gear with 4.56s or 4.88s and go 55 mph on flat in 4th gear. :p

As for off-road, I've been wheelin a bit with my 4.10s and 35s and it's just been alright--I'd definitely like to be lower geared--but I don't think the tiny bit of lower gain off-road I would get by going to 4.56s or 4.88s is worth loosing my freeway "overdrive" speed. Oh, that's real special, I can be like 30:1 final ratio or like 32:1 or maybe 36:1 final low ratio. ::) That's not that much of a difference to me--I'd rather keep the top end highway speed and then just get a doubler.

and 62 come stock with 4.11 to make up for the auto .... i had a set of those too but the 78 4.10 "should" bolt up easyer on my 1-82 60.... and save me some cash .... they were the same as the 456's

thahx again for all the input guys..... great as always

I'll confirm the 4.11's and a future doubler....way more useful with 33's

OK so I got the 456's for the same price highway well sucks doent like going over 60 real MPH shows 66 on the speedo at 3k rpm ... but as I said before I'm not in a hurry if I'm in the cruiser ... I did this cause the 456's have a DET locker in them cant go wrong there right the rear is bolted in OPEN going to weld .. I had to remove the bearing cap to get the allen bolt out for the cross shaft on the det drop out SO i need to reset it and drop it in thur and/or Fri this week ... then next week it off to k-rock for the first run in it :-\ Any one want to trade some 33 radial swamper for 33 or 35 BFG a/t or m/t's :D

is it really that bad to run 33s with 3.70s? what kind of problems can/will i run into if i don't get heavier gears when i get bigger tires?

It really wasnt that bad just I have alot of hill I drive on and I like to rock crawl with it and stock gear just didnt do it for me... the highway was way better than now on flat land i could cruise 80 but like ferg said up hills you slow down to 40 and i have a few place i had to go to 2nd and hit about 35 to get up now i cruise them at 60 ... so i like my new gears and i think i'll LOVE them nexted week at katemcy for the lonestar round up ;) just do the 33 and look for 4.10 drop outs later i'm going to do 35's to make the 456's more user friendly ...

I mean that question is .. did you have H42 = 4.11 with 33" but if you have H55F you can take a risk with 4.56 .. I'm take this option and is the best choice for me ..

4sp :'( I hope to get a H55 someday and/or 35's

I run 35s and 456s....but I also have an H55F. :D If you are thinking about this set-up in the long run...I highly recommend it. I drive my rig to the trail, 2-10 hours one way, and this setup it outstanding on the highway. The Cruiser is actually capable of cruising (at low RPMs) at a much higher MPH than I am comfortable driving at. I keep her at posted limits, sometimes as fast as 73 mph.

I run 35" MT/Rs with 4.56s, with a 2F/H55F combo. Speedo is pretty accurate, end up doing about 2800 rpm on the highway at good speed. 1st gear is very brief on pavement, but lovely on the trail. At freeway speeds, 4th gear winds up the motor to 3000 and a little over *constantly*. On 33s it should be a little worse
