Easiest is to just jog the steering out using U joints and a carrier bearing.

looking for pics of fj40 Steering set up with a454 in it .

I am in the process of a 454 to fj40 swap. Haven't addressed the steering yet but interested in what you came up with. And any other info you have on this such as cooling and intake (if its a L29).

It looks like I can use a couple ujoints to move the steering shaft outwards for header clearance then angle back inwards to connect with the steering box. I am using the stock steering shaft at the fire wall and Saginaw box.

Ran a bb chevy for 15 years, used 60's bb camaro, chevelle cast iron manifolds( as they are a tight fit to the steering gear) steering shaft just cleared by 1/2 inch. Also had a custom 5 core radiator made, never once overheated in 15 years!

Blue one above isn't a 454... actually it is a Cady 472 and the box is a Scout PS box. Steering shaft cleared perfectly after I spaced scout box about 3/4" off frame and offset the Chevy steering column as far out as possible :p

I agree with you, I used the scout 2 box as well, and it was a tight fit with a SBC... though the biggest issue was getting the lines from the pump.... there's not a lot of room in that area once you put a steering box there.
