The first step in the 40 vs 60 decision should be to define YOUR use of the vehicle. Initailly, I had a nice clean 40 and found out that it did not fit my lifestyle. Later, I got a 60.
The 40 rode rough, was noisy, gathered more dust inside, ran slower on highways, was harder to steer. There was no way to enjoy a conversation or the radio while underway. Also, a 40 on icy pavement is in constant danger of swapping ends or doing a 360. Having said all that, if one's main interest was in driving challenging off road trails, the 40 would be the choice.
If you anticipate that you will be driving it as basic transportation on paved and unpaved roads, the 60 is superior. More comfort, more passenger and cargo room, better handling manners and ease of driving, AC, tighter body, better visibility, particularly at night.
You can modify a 60 into something close to a 40's capablities but you will never be able to modify a 40 to get as close to what a 60 offers.
