I am thinking about getting a 40" LED light bar from Lumatech shown in the following link:

http://www.lumatech.net/Products/x40.html

I tried search but not a lot of people are running 40" light bars on here. I have a few questions about placement and wiring. I would like to have it right above the windshield, however, my roof basket does not extends out that far, nor have I seen mounts made for the 80. Would it be a bad idea just to use the mounts the light comes with and drill above the windshield? Lastly, where would you run the wiring?? I have also seen a jeep with it mounted on the hood that looked pretty cool. What are your thoughts?

I say buy a gutter mount/stand and have a crossbar made to mount it.. As far as the wire drilling with the best grommets would do the trick

Did you look at the Rigid E-Series Light Bar? It runs the same $ and length, has mounting brackets available, is used in industry as well as the race circuits and seems to have more LED's per 40". I am just wondering what brought you to decide on lumatech, since I will be looking into these more in the future.

If you mount it right above the windshield, you will have significant glare on the hood.

If you mount it on the hood you will have significant additional air drag 9and weight on the hood fighting the gas struts as they try to do their job and hold the hood opem.

These are both poor choices for light mounting as far as function is considered.

Mark...

I have a 41" showing up later this week along with three 7" that I will be testing. In my situation mine will mount directly onto my INTI. As for wiring I've had good success with REMKE products, I've got them in the past from McMaster Carr.

Since the roof rack basket (or whatever it is) is further back, mounting the LED bar to the front of it would tend to keep the glare off the hood...of course, the OP would want to close the shade on the sunroof when it's in operation.;)

I like the look of the lumatechs better. The last time I checked, lumens for the lumatech and rigid 40" are in the 15k mark..besides a couple 100 lumens isnt gunna make THAT much of a difference.

lol air drag....its like trying to improve MPGs with these rigs. Is the 80 the only vehicle that has glare of the hood because I've seen tons of jeeps and trucks with them above the windshield. im sure if it was blinding them, they wouldnt do it...

I would also mount the light bar before the struts connect to the hood (closest to the windshield) so there is less force pushing down on the hood.

Cool deal, could you post up pics when youre finished?

hah my only concern about mounting to my roof basket is that if it is a 60 degree light, wouldn't a lot of my light be cut off from the body of the 80?

OP, You may have noticed a few 80's on here with the center raised rib of the hood lined or painted flat black. It apparently cuts the glare from an overhead lighting installation, which is common on 80's.

This is the purpose of the "back center hood" it's not just for looks... :)

It does work, I've had 4 Hella Rally 4000's across my roof before, if it wasn't for the back out I wouldn't have been able to see much past the glare doing recovery runs in the desert.
