My 1998 4 Runner has great ground clearance to maneuver off road to a remote cabin in the Blue Ridge Mountains of VA. Looking to replace for a used later model with fewer miles but concerned about sufficient ground clearance. Any model years to avoid or recommend? Thanks

hey there... just to clarify, are you asking specifically about 120-series lexus/toyotas? (i.e., 2003-2008 gx470, 4th gen 4runners)

3rd gen 4Runners have 2” more ground clearance than the 4th gen. I’m not sure how that’s accomplished because I’m pretty sure they run the same size tire (diameter) from the factory. The rear pumpkin must be tiny on the 3rd gen?

Different control arms/geometry up front. Hence the ball joint failures you see too often in that gen.
