Well I'm starting to build up my Cruiser and I'm going to run the 315's so I have decided to go with 4.88's. The Cruiser will only be used to drive to work 20 miles a day--not any faster than 60, and for wheeling. So far I have seen two brands discussed--is there a favorite?

Yukons----Randy's housebrand
Precision---Reider's housebrand

I've been told by many that Precision Gears are the prefered aftermarket brand, and that's from several owners of different shops and several guys from this site as well. That's what I'll get for my rig when I save some more pennies.

I'm looking at doing the same thing for my rig with the 315's. I think I'm going with precision as well!
but thanks for bringing the topic up!

So far the choice is easy--think they ever go on sale? :)

gears

There are no 4.88's in Yukon anymore. There is a "Value Gear". The old Yukon were the same as PG, but some had noise issues in 80 series, would be fine in a noisier 40 or 60. The new gears in the value gear are much better than any prior.

I don't think this is correct. I looked at a set of Yukon's that said made in India (or Italy, not sure), whereas the 80 series Precision Gears are made in the USA. I do agree, that noise issues aside the Yukons are probably just fine in a noisy 40.

I found that the Precision Gears set up as quiet as OEM, and our gear guy here said they set up very easily, whatever that means. I originally got the PG gear sets on the advice of Christo Slee and have been very happy with them-no issues at all.

Pg

The PG were the same, are NOT made in the US, this was verified by several dealers of thier product verifying stampings, as well as a set that I purchased for the sole purpose of seeing if they were any different. There are only 2 factories that make these particular gears.

Cost Difference

What's the difference in cost between the Precision 4:88's and OEM ?

Oem

How much ?

Haven't checked lately since I do not think it is worth it. I think last one we sold was close to $600 after paying the freight to get it here.

I broke a oem 4.88 so I can't say they are stronger, however they are quiet and set up very easy.

If you really want them, we can get them. Just takes $'s and time.

Christo, can you get an OEM for the rear which is a 9 1/2 in 4.88 ring and pinion gear? You sold one for $600, is that front and rear ring/pinion gears? Please let me know and thanks. :D

600 bucks would be for one end only. OEM gearsets are VERY spendy.

Yes, we can get 4.88's and 4.56 for both front and rear. $600 was for one end.
