Hi all,

I think I'm having an evaporative emissions problem as my main fuel tank is becoming pressurised on occasion, however I'm struggling to find/figure out the evap system as my vehicle has two additional fuel tanks and it seems the system has been modified to accommodate the additional tanks.

I can't find a maintenance manual for this vehicle, so was hoping someone here could provide some suggestions or provide a schematic for the evap system on this model?

Thanks!

I may suggest looking into the charcoal canister. When I had my 80 until I replaced my canister there was a lot of pressure build up when I’d go to refuel

Thanks coldtaco, hadn't seen that online catalog before, very handy!

Salty, yeah... that was my first thought however I'm struggling to find the charcoal canister in this truck so thinking that perhaps this model uses a different system? Does anyone know anything about this?

Thanks!

Hello,

The charcoal canister seems to live somewhere in the frame, or so it seems from the parts diagram.

Hope this helps.

Is it definitely a 4.5 FZ FE? Some African models have the carbed 4.5. Good luck with the fuel tank pressure. As soon as people fit extra tanks without a knowledge of how the system works it can be near on impossible sorting it out.
Does you fuel transfer from one tank to another, or can you switch and run the fuel from any tank direct to the engine?
The part number for the canister is 77740-60410. I couldnt find a pic of one, but all the toyota canisters of that era are rectangular , maybe a bit bigger than a cigarette packet.

Thanks JuanJ for the diagram, regardless if it came with it stock or not my truck definitely doesn't have a charcoal canister now. I think my problem was a bad breather.

Thanks Rosco for the information. You are definitely right... it's been a mission trying to figure out how this system is set up. Yeah, it's the 1FZ-FE injected engine. Any general suggestions for a multi-tank system? Things to avoid, watch out for, do, etc.? I've got three tanks, the two spares pump into the main tank and then fuel is pumped from the main tank to the engine. Each tank has it's own breather as well. Return fuel goes straight to main tank as well.

Thanks!!!

Return fuel goes straight to main tank as well.

On the factory toyota system ,the fuel returns to what ever tank it comes from. This helps eliminates vacuum in the tank its drawing from and pressure in the main tank which is what you are getting. There are valves available for this on ebay

Hello,

I forgot to mention that the charcoal canister is the part with the number 77740 in the diagram. My bad.

The part number is 77740-60410.
