Under the hood
Im resurrecting a rough 2nd gen 4runner ('90, 3VZE + MT + 4WD). Im to the point of it being up and running reasonably well (tks Gnob!), stopping well and almost ready for smog and registration.

In a shakedown drive yesterday everything was going great until quite suddenly mid-drive the oil pressure gauge registered 0 oil pressure. I had just changed the oil and filter, so I knew I had enough oil and it was the correct stuff and a plugged filter was virtually impossible. I pulled over and shut the motor off and let it sit for a bit, then restarted. It showed pressure again, and was good the rest of the drive home (approx 20miles.) When I got home my oil level was good, and no sign of any leakage.

Is it possible that its got intermittent oil pressure? Or is this likely a gauge issue? On my LC I have a mechanically-driven oil pump, so it either works or it doesn't, it cant really be intermittent. Not familiar with this motor though.

By what you are describing, I would think it was a gauge, sender or wire issue. Check it with a mechanical gauge for peace of mind. Good luck with it. Follow up so we know how it went.

This behavior continues, but is less and less frequent. For now I am calling it a bad sensor (partially clogged maybe?) and will continue running the vehicle. It is otherwise running great. If it continues to be an issue, then I'll replace the sensor and see if that clears it up.

Change the sensor anyway. Don't wait and hope it goes away.
