I'm working on a 5.7 3URFE engine that broke an intake valve, the valve head bounced around inside the cylinder.

Found the broken valve spring, retainer, keepers and rocker under the v/c.

Removed intake manifold and fished out valve stem and metallic pieces with a magnet.
I can see the broken valve face on top of the piston, the metallic pieces are probably valve seat bits. Looks pretty ugly in there.

Trying to decide if it is worthwhile to rebuild or just find a good used engine.

Used engines are going for around $5000, a new long block from Toyota is $22,000.

Anyone been deep inside one of these engines yet?
Can't seem to find any info on disassembly and cam timing procedure, anyone know where to get a manual besides Toyota's prepaid subscription system?

Thanks

Wow. 1st reported case I have heard of anything this catastrophic going on with the UR family of engines. What happened?

You can get a long block for a bit cheaper but maybe going the way of a new short block might be better at $5500.

Send me an e-mail brian@jowettperformance.com and I can forward you the manual sections you'll need.

If the head popped off the valve, they might be two piece.... cylinder will probably be damaged, which = new engine time as no oversized pistons are made for these. I don't think I can recall any other UR series having an upper end problem like that. The few that do have issues seem to be lower end.

What happened?

X2 .. Inquiring minds want to know ....

I thought these things were near bullet-proof

Ok, maybe not 50BMG, but ... :grinpimp:

What happened?

Just a bone stock soccer mom car, was cruising on the frw and ck engine light came on. Pulled over, heard noises and called tow truck.

Don't know if valve head broke off first, or if spring broke first allowing the keepers to pop off and the valve to drop.

Thanks for helping with the 1HD-FTE BTW, it's going to a new home

Still a major "wow."

I mentioned above that going the way of a new short block will be significantly cheaper than an new long block.

My pleasure--glad the deal worked out between you guys.

Crazy. Never seen a valve or spring fail on one of those. Interested to find out what the end result is.

Just from a personal experience I had with a 5VZ, the block and head are both probably toast. The spark plug disintegrated on mine and mashed in between the head and the piston. It damaged both badly. Being that it's the head of the valve which is a much larger and harder piece of metal it's probably done extensive damage to the underside of the head. I would say a complete used engine is probably going to be the cheapest option. That's what I did on my 5VZ truck.

What year is this vehicle?
It it an original owner?
Has it been regularly dealer-serviced?

Toyota may be willing to assist.......?

It’s pretty rare on this forum. Honestly it’s pretty rare on the Tundra/Sequoia too but there are more of those produced. The LC/LX engine comes from a different factory so that could be one reason why there are less issues, though it may also just be the statistical sample size combined with the type of folks who post on mud?

I’ve been reading up on this issue for some time today, I found quite a few threads with the tundras, but less than 5 on the 200 series. Does anyone know how widespread this failure was?
There are over 18,000 threads on the 200 sub forum. If you found less than 5 about the issue I’d say it’s extremely rare.

With time comes knowledge.... The valves in the 200 are shared with dozens of other Toyota and Lexus models along with the various V6 and V8 engines that are installed in them. It's not very common to lose an intake valve. This was most likely a valve spring failure that led to the valve being in wrong place at the wrong time. Springs break occasionally, but again, not super common in the UR V8.
