The 40 moved out of the garage under it own power for the first time in months. Trailered it down to the local muffler shop to see what kind of a plan to come up with, it is going back on monday to get the exhaust done. A few parts needed to be ordered. They are going to put in a y-pipe, to a 3" collector, single into the muffler, 3" single out exiting behind the rear tire. I am wanting a mellow tone at idle and wheeling speeds, but throaty when your foot is in it.

Got home from the firehouse and got right to work. I had to drill the t-case and front pinion flange to match my temporary front drive shaft, not a biggie but a lot of step drilling, then mounted the drive shaft. My little guy and I fastened the Con-fer rear seat. Eventually it will be going to the sand blaster and get powder coated then the wife will make new covers. While I was at work, my helper cleaned up the inside of the cruiser, it came out pretty good considering the condition of it when he started.

The Optima battery tray from Ruff Stuff was delivered while I was away. I cut a plate to block off the vent opening in the firewall, welded the tray to it, made a simple bracket attaching it to fender to help support the end of it and mounted everything up for a trial fit, pulled it all back out and painted it.

All bolted up prior to paint, fits perfectly and very secure, I need to re-rout the negative cable to come up from the same side as the positive cable for a cleaner look, a little OCD I guess..

Got the 40 to the muffler shop yesterday morning and 3 hours later I ended up with this, 2" "Y" pipe into a single in, single out 3" muffler, mandrel bent tail pipe puzzle. It has a nice low tone so as not to be annoying on the trail or street.

Today was spent fabbing my front seat mounts. I had enough 1" tube hanging out in the garage, so I put it to good use. Drug out the bender and bolted it down, pulled out the welder, the chop saw, tube notcher, drill and angle grinder and set to work. It has been a while since I bent any tube, needless to say I was a little rusty but kept the scrap to almost nil. Once everything was tacked, marked, drilled and bolted, the frame was taken out and fully welded and reinstalled with grade 8 hardware. Then my new to me Honda Civic seats were finally installed.

Well the shake down run at Pismo was going great until................ fuel issues cut our weekend fun short from the dunes. A big Thanks to Georg for the tow off the beach, I owe you
Had a great time none the less, now back to the garage to take care of a few things that reared their ugly heads, hopefully in time for Thanksgiving weekend.

After the shake down run, it was quickly noticed the stock column and wheel weren't going to work. Since the the column I picked up at the pick a part did not have keys, I picked up a new ignition lock and key from the local parts house. Once that was installed I bolted up the new Grant 13" wheel. Now I will have some room between the bottom of the wheel and the seat for my legs and the tilt is going to be a huge plus.

The super flat 55 springs maxed out my shackles and laid flat against the frame. I decided to flip the upper mounts around and use the same holes in the frame to bolt them back on prior to welding. Now that it is back down on the ground, the shackle angle is straight up and down (not happy with it). The last photo shows the difference once the mount is flipped. If the springs do not settle in, I will be moving them forward to ease the angle.

My brake booster check valve has seen better days. A run to the auto parts store turned out to be fruitless and online prices are ridiculous!! So I stopped by a local import auto dismantler to see if they had anything or knew of any cross reference part. The man behind the counter told me to take a look at the cars out back and "good luck". Well as luck would have it, the first car I looked at (a 81-85 Celica) had the valve I needed, and best part of all, it was metal and not plastic!!! I walked up to the counter, he looked at it and said "$5.00 sound OK?" I said sold!!!! On the way home I stopped at the local pick a part to if they had any in their lot, the first car had one, so I snagged it, the 3 others I found, the boosters were gone. This one cost me the paltry sum of .56!!!!! So for 5.56 I got 2 valves, my lucky day!!

Well done. It pays to look at all possible sources for parts...

And it doesn't always have to be expensive to keep these old cruisers running well.

You are absolutely correct Tom, it is nice to find parts that don't break the bank!!!

I tried to flip my rear shackle mounts like you, and didn't like it, like you. I ended up putting them back the original way and cut about 1/2" or 3/4" off so I could weld them where I wanted without them hanging out the back. No bolts.

Do you have any pictures of how your cut fenders look from the back? I like the look from the side and mine don't have much metal down there any more anyway. :bang:

I have been chasing braking issues and has been narrowed down to the m/c, it is being rebuilt and I will be getting it back tomorrow. Today I scored (5) H1 24 bolt wheels, they will be re-centered with pressed centers, rock rings, pvc inserts and 37's mounted on them.

My current tires and wheels are listed in the for sale section if anyone is interested.

Pick n pull is your friend. It doesn't have to be a cruiser to be useful.

Charlie,

When are you going to make an appearance at a So Cal TLC meeting, we have not seen you in quite a long time!!!!
