Can my buddy in his sequoia come?

Probably in for Big Bear. Drove by the exit to Virginia Lakes on the 395 going to Tahoe last week. 6+ hours easy. No thanks. Better news is that the highway bypassing Olancha is almost finished.
Yes, Virginia Lakes is a bit of a hike from south OC, but it’s worth it! I just camped there on the way to the Rubithon, and liked it so much that I camped there again on the way home. And, not just a beautiful place to camp, but there are some nice trails (and, of course, good fishing) in the immediate area. I don’t think you could go wrong with either run!

Thank you both, Marc & Dat, for setting up these great run options for our club. You are both very much appreciated!

Gold Mountain is the one with the gatekeeper atcthe beginning or end depending on your start, right?

Yes. The other easier route to the moon would be via White Mountain! Or we can take the scenic route on Snow Slide to Butler Peak lookout point.

We can talk about it Thursday evening at camp. There are a couple of obstacles on Gold Mountain that the wider and longer wheelbase of the Tacoma may not handle well, and they aren't the gatekeeper.

PS. I'll be coming up Friday the 25th. Wine Dinner Thursday evening.

UPDATE: 3rd Annual Big Bear A Thon

Date: July 24-27; three nights of camping.

New for this year: we may possibly hold a raffle of stuff donate by club members. Bring something to exchange with your fellow members.

Meet-up point: Victoria's Family Restaurant. The restaurant opens at 9 am so plan to meet there and head to the trail at 10-ish.

Campsite:
1. Primary at Holcomb Pinnacle Camp Road and Van Deusen where we camped in previous years.
2. An alternative site will be nearby on Holcomb Pinnacle Camp Road.
3. A 3rd alternative is further east off 3N32 here.

Here's our tentative itinerary:

Day 1 - Thursday 7/24. Drive to camp. We will get to camp via a trailer friendly Holcomb Valley Road (3N16), a more scenic drive on Snow Slide (2N13), or try a hard bypass if the vehicles and drivers are up to the challenge.

Day 2 - Friday 7/25. Exploring and trail running. We will leave camp around 9:30 am for White Mountain, taking on less easy bypasses at spots if desired.

Day 3 - Saturday 7/26. Exploring the Baldwin Lake trails. We'll depart camp around 9:30 am toward Heartbreak Ridge. Not sure if we will make it to the ridge but we will explore the area.

Day 4 - Sunday 7/27. Breakfast and break camp for home!

If you would like to suggest other camp sites or trails, please reply to this thread or send me a DM.

Hope to see you there.

Myself and one other will be arriving Friday evening.

This sounds fun, I'm pretty new to the community and I just discovered this thread. I can't commit yet, but put me down as a maybe for Friday. I have a few questions if it's ok:

1) if I can only make it a day, should I just plan to make it to the campground by 9 or so and leave with the crew for the day (and will folks generally be at the primary campground, or too soon to tell? Holcomb Pinnacle Camp Road and Van Deusen?
2) Is car camping ok if I decide to stay the night?
3) I have what I think are the factory recovery hooks in the front, not actually sure if there are points in the rear... I have an LC100 on 33s that's otherwise bone stock (including factory bumpers). What do others do for the 100 to satisfy that requirement?

That will most likely be our campsite. I will post on this thread if we have to go to an alternate site.

Yes. I will car camp myself.

Stock LC100s come with front and rear tow hooks which will satisfy the recovery points requirement. The 33s will help some but low hanging bits like your running boards may get damaged by some challenging obstacles along trails. Nearly all of us remove the running boards and most replace them with rocksliders.

I hope you decide to join us for some of the fun!

Maybe time to jump on this deal!

Hi everyone! I plan on attending for at least Thursday, and possibly Friday. Driving up from San Diego.

I’ll be accompanied by a buddy w/ a GX470 and I’ll be there in my Cruiser. I look forward to making some friends and having a blast!

P.S. - is there a HAM radio channel established for that event?
