3FE swap into FJ 60 (1 Viewer)

1-Can I use the 60 tank with an externally mounted fuel pump?
2-Will the 3FE sit on the 2F motor mounts?
3-Will a 2F rear Main fit a 3FE?
4-Will a 2F Valve cover fit the 3FE head?

1-Yes, but why not swap the tank and use the more reliable in tank pump?

2-Yes

3-No-they are different. I seem to remember the 3FE rear main is more expensive.

4-While physically it will fit, you can't use it. You must use the 3Fe cover.


Regarding the engine and tranny mounts-they are the same assuming the 3FE is going into the FJ60, and all manual trannys, H41, H42, and H55f mount on exactly the same mounts, in the same positions.

The 3FE in my FJ60 is also from an 80 series. I used the FJ62 pedal assembly in my FJ60. I screwed it onto the floor, the lower screw went in the factor location and the upper screw is holding the pedal assembly with a washer. it has held up for 4 years. If you do use the FJ-62 tank make sure it has been replaced already by the recall. If not, go with a different solution becaue I have acutally had two of those tanks split seams.

I am researching this idea and it will happen. I have both trucks 86 FJ60 has bad engine, 88 FJ62 is very rusty, bad brakes and bad wiring to rear of truck. Runs great. I would like to put the 3FE into the 60 with the 4 speed behind and manual shift transfer case.

Who has done this? Is there any info already out there? Links please. I will document and take as many pictures as I can. But I would rather not re-invent the wheel.

My situation is very similar to yours. I have nearly a rust-free 87 FJ60, with a tired engine & a FJ62 that has some body cancer that I'm not sure I want to deal with, but it run's & drives great. I'm just wondering how much time this is going to consume providing that I have the necessary tools & am prepared.

If you have the trucks side by side it's just about how fast you can wrench. You can a few friends could probably do the bulk of it in a weekend if you say have two on pulling powertrains in parallel and sic them on various tasks (fuel, cooling, electrcal....) . this assumes you don't do anything but swap powertrains, no engine maintenance while it's out kind of stuff, etc...

In my case I just had an engine and harness. I had to wade through the wiring, which since it was from an 80 didn't match up to anything and was not generally the right length to deal with. Going with the 62 means you can do like one person who responded to my swap thread that moved the 62 series dash over so that the whole swap was literally plug and play.

Heck you could even have the 62 power accessories to if you like.

This project is getting close to driving under its own power. No turbo yet but that is next after it is driving.

I have Used Jim Godwins article www.fourwheeler.com/techarticles/129_0012_fuel_injection_install/index.html to do most of this. Also the forum itself has been invaluable.

I have noticed a few details I would like to get in this thread for future reference.

1. Jims article is very good. It says you need the entire harness. It means you need the ENTIRE harness. Don't leave anything behind.
2. I had to use the FJ 62 wiper motor, the harness did not plug in to 60 motor. Hooked up to linkages fine.
3 You will need the 62 Charcoal Canister
4 I did not change the steering column to fit the larger bodied 62 ignition switch I rewired the 60 switch to work. The 62 has some BRN wires that the 60 does not. Wires go as follows. BLK/ WHT---> BRN/RED , BLK/YLW --->BRN/WHT , BLK/RED--->BRN. I wired these together in the 62 harness then to the matching wires coming off the 60 switch. I cut the 2 GRN/WHT wires at the switch for the key buzzer. They are in the harness for the 62 separately. There is plenty of room to stuff the extra wires up in the dash,
All guages and tach from the 62 will swap directly into the 60 dash insert so you can have the 4500 rpm tach and 110 MPH speedo.

I ended up using a generic GM , Pontiac I believe charcoal canister. I found the info for that on mud.

It goes to show there are a number of ways to accomplish wiring. I need to pdf my notes.
