I've decided to get off my butt and tune my wife's 89 Fj62. I changed plugs, wires, cap and rotor. I know jack about EFI engines give me an old F engine and I'm fine. How do I get to the valves so I can adjust them. I'm trying to get some more fuel efficiency and power out of the old girl. I'll also be replacing the oil pan gasket due to the po's bad gasket job when the bottom end was worked on. Please help me out I know I need to get FSM but school me none the less.

Valves on the "old girl" are adjusted just like on a 2F. Nothing there has changed.

You'll need to remove the valve cover to adjust the valves - do get the FSM for the settings and remember the enginge needs to be hot while you're doing the adjustment. Snap-On makes a neat adjustment tool that hold the lock nut while you adjust the rocker.

The oil pan can be a real bitch to get off. If you have a heavy hand you can mangle it which means that the $30 gasket job will now run $200 for a new pan. If you can let the truck sit for a few days you can use a bottle jack w/ a 2x4 against the pan (jack against the frame rail) and every so often give the jack a pump until the pan drops. Take you time or buy a new pan ahead of time.

Remember the FSM is your best friend. Good luck.

I have the same problem with the valves. It's not the adjustment that's the problem it's getting to them. How much has to be remove to get to them and how do run the engine with the mass air flow sensor removed? Or do you just get the engine warm before taking apart and then just adjust them.

Edit: I tpye real slow. I add my tread and five new posts.

Yes.

Look at the engine and have your tools layed out so when you get back from your warm up drive you can start on it.

I bought a "3FE Valve Set of gaskets" from Cruiser Dan. It comes with every gasket you need to do it.

You just need to get the intake hose out of the way, along with the hose to the idle control valve, PCV valve and probably some other stuff. You want access to the nuts on top of the rocker arm cover. Remove the nuts, pop the cover off, and adjust away. Having a gasket handy for the rocker arm cover would be a good idea. Might also want to replace the PCV grommet at the same time.

anyone with a photo of the 3f valves exposed?

Maybe.
