Hi all. I have a 90 62 with the 3FE. A couple months ago I did a complete tune-up with all Toyota parts (plugs, cap, rotor, wires, pcv, fuel filter, coolant, ATF, etc.) and the cruiser ran great. Prior to tune-up it failed emissions as it was running a bit too rich, but ran great. The cruiser needed exhaust so I figured I would get the new exhaust installed as well as new oxygen sensors and that should get me square for emissions. Well on the way to the exhaust shop it started to run like crap and tripped the check engine light. I pulled plugs and noticed the front 3 looked really rich so I swapped new plugs when I picked the cruiser up from the exhaust shop. With new plugs, oxygen sensors, cat and exhaust I left thinking the cruiser would run great. However, the truck still stumbled, missed and ran like crap. I just pulled the check engine code and I get a 28 (oxygen sensor). Do I need to do anything special to get the cruiser to recognize the new oxygen sensors or something? I am frustrated as it ran great until yesterday and I thought the new sensors and exhaust would fix everything. Any help would be much appreciated.

after you installed the o2's did you reset the computer? you can achieve this by pulling the efi fuse or taking the negative ground loose for a minute or 2.

If that does not work i would look into fuel pressure regulator it seems your getting to much fuel(maybe being i do not know if you reset or not) and it is loading up everything which might set the code off..........hence there is no code for when the reg. quits.....just a guess but worth looking into to

or run a fuel pressure test according to the fsm

Did you pull the EFI fuse after having the O2 sensors installed? This will force the EFI ECU to re-calibrate to the new sensors, and it will clear out any old code that might have been in there from before. Pull the fuse (or disconnect the battery), let it sit for 10-15 mins, then reinstall. Drive it for awhile, see if the CEL comes back on, and if it starts running better.

Thanks for the info. I pulled the positive terminal and the efi fuse and tried. Still a stumble/miss? As far as the regulator, would that be the "damper" as Toyota calls it on the firewall side of the fuel rail? If so I replaced that a couple months ago when it started to leak. That is the only thing I see that looks like a pressure regulator. Thanks and keep the ideas coming please. I am stumped on this one.

No it is on the other end..let me see if i can find a picture...

Thanks for the speedy replies guys! You rock! As far as the regulator, is there any good way to test or would you just replace and hope for the best (if the fuse idea does not take care of it)?

you would need a fsm and run a fuel pressure test in order to isolate the problem.

:Dor run to the nearest Advance order one put it on and if it works your set if not take the fawker back:flipoff2:

15 minutes later...

Reinstalled batt cable and EFI and engine fuses. Started, still have CEL on and still a stumble/miss???

Still a 28 / oxygen sensor CEL code. The computer seems unable to recognize the new parts and tune the mixture accordingly. Shouldn't the new O2 sensors be getting the proper signal to the computer by themselves? When they would crap out on my Mopar products I could just replace the sensor and it would run properly. What else would cause the computer to think the O2 sensor would be bad?

Thanks again for the help guys!

You have a meter?

I just changed the plugs again and it appears #3 is running rich compared to the others. I still have the miss/stumble and the CEL is on. Could I have a bad injector dumping too much fuel causing the O2 sensor to fault?

Oh, and does anyone know how much the FSM is from cdan? Just looking to save a call to him. If my cruiser keeps up at this rate he will be sending me Chrismas gifts :)

Have you had any progress on your problem?
