Moving forward with the de smog now that my fresh rebuild engine is in.

My mechanic says there's no way this will work bc the fuel pressure regulator is driven off vacuum.

Also says the engine can't "learn" or adjust like the desmog FAQ states.

Anyone ever done this before? Ran into any issues?

I have done it no problem so far and have had about 3k on the desmog

No issues here. We performed the BB method for desmog. After about 2 years we even changed out the cats and noticed that the original ones with about 335K were in VGC.

I've performed this work as well and I have had no issues.

Personally I wouldn't go crazy doing it. If you can do it, do it. If your mechanic is giving you heartache, don't. In my experience, there was no noticeable performance gain.

I'm satisfied with doing this mod simply because of the cleaner more roomy engine bay.

I have just completed my De smog, and the only issue that I had was finding the right belt after I removed the Smog pump…..Finally after trying a belt recommended to me by jrmudder84 (that did not work on my truck, but works on his…don't ask me why or how...) I went to Advance Auto and I found the exact belt. Everything is good to go now. Love having more room in the engine bay!

I agree. Did the same with my 91. I used the Denso belt as referred by Spook50. My only hiccup has been removing the EGR union (90404-26003) on the manifold. I used a combo of jbweld (yeah yeah - I know-should not have done that) and some exhast epoxy to seal the hole in the nut (90402-26002) for that union.
It has started to loosen so I'm going to have to come up with a way to remove that union to use the NAPA plug that, again, Spook50 recommended.

All this aside, it has definitely cleaned up room under the hood, if nothing else.

Derek I used a brass cap from home depot and a baby pipe wrench to tighten it up. Have had no issues thus far. If you will be at the meeting next month I can show you how mine looks.

Thanks! I hope/plan to be there since I missed Dec and had to balk out of the Xmas party.
Do you have any specs on that cap?
I have the oil plug but just could not get the union off. I know John had same issue with the union.

I dont have the specs.....What I did was take the original hose off and I cut it and took off the original end (that screws on to the manifold) and took it to home depot and matched up the size (since the thread pattern wont match exactly because it is an ultra-fine thread, and the brass cap is a course thread) I then put a small amount of JB Weld on the inside of the brass cap, hand tightened it on then torqued it down with a pipe wrench. I have had no issues thus far and it has been several months ago since I did this. * NOTE : The JB Weld is not holding the cap on. The cap was a tight fit to begin with....I primarily used the JB Weld as a fail safe (kind of like loctite)

Hope this helps....If you have any questions let me know I live in Raleigh close to North Hills mall if you ever need to swing by to check it out.
