3fE Oil Pan Gasket Replacement

Hello, I am about to change the oil pan gasket on my 88 FJ62 with 260K Miles. The question I have is: There are some markings on the OEM gasket, are they for orientation? Also any tips or things I should know going into it?

Thanks,

Jesse

Well, they will only face one way - the bolt holes will line up one way and not the other.

I believe the little ears go towards the front.

Looks like you are pretty new here - welcome. Do you have much wrench time on your Cruiser?

I would not charcterize this as a trivial task. I would recomend spending some time with the search function searching oil pan. Speaking as someone who tried to do a pan gasket in a hurry and fuqued it up! Arrgh. Read up, do it right the first time...

What makes you think it is the gasket that needs replacing? The orig pans leak a lot at the plate, or drain plug. THe 2F's (not sure about 3FE's) leak commonly from the side cover and valve cover, which makes people think it is the oil pan. I like to pressure wash when checking for leaks.

Good Luck,

Thanks, I do have some time wrenching on my FJ62, have done the usual, brakes tune-up, steering and now working on doing the Knuckles. I do have a leak on the Valve cover which I am also going to replace and do the valves at the same time. I have cleaned and re-torqued both valve cover and oil pan and both seem to be leaking. I got the OEM gaskets and FIPG silicone. I does not look too complicated just wanted to know if there were any tips I could benefit from before starting.

Yes, clean everything before hand, and then eat your Wheaties that morning...

Trting to line that pan up and hold it in place while starting the bolts is a bear. Actually, I think someone wrote that they bought four longer bolts for this job - it would be worth it!

Just hit Search and you will read all these great tips...
