Hello all, I have found myself helping out a buddy doing some PM on his BJ70.
We pulled the rad for a re-core and while we were in there we figured it would be a good time for belts, hoses and a new water pump. He phoned Toyota and they quoted him 165$ for the water pump , so he ordered it. When it came in we found it to be a rebuild kit. Now im wondering if any here have tackled this job. Im having a hard time just getting the bearing retainer clip out!

You should have been able to get one at a auto parts place, all rebuilt for the same amount of money.

You can probably find a OEM water pump for that price !

16100-59105 for the pump and 16343-560232 for the gasket.

Bought these 2 parts from Downtown Toyota in Vancouver in late 2004 (shouldn't be TOO much of a change in price) pump was $152.84 and the gasket was $7.25. The pump was a Toyota factory reman. Check with another toyota dealer!!

You have been charged for a new pump, and you should go back and get it. The part number, as mentioned before, is 16100-59105 (I have one in front of me on the shelf).

Has anyone rebuilt a water pump? My bearing went on mine and I've thought about rebuilding it to have as a trail spare. Worth the trouble/cost? The FSM describes how to do it.

Funny how price can be different from a place to another...

138.50 for the pump and 4.30 for the gasket here in Montréal (03/23/2005) !!!

Most everyone gets the whole pump. I didn't even know you could get the rebuild kit. If you can't return it I'd be interested but not at the price of a whole pump :) .

It would be handy to have in my box of spares when I do my long drives to Central America. If I blow a water pump in Mexico I'm sure someone local can install the rebuild kit and it weighs less and takes less space than the whole pump.

Well we maybe we should make a deal since I cracked the casting trying to disasemble this eve and now the kit is not only non returnable but useless. Langley Toyota has a real special place in my heart, now that I've seen the wrong side of the barrel again.

9180ltd, I think I have a spare pump (original sept 84 BJ60 3B) with a siezed bearing (I think the casting is fine) kicking around the garage somewhere, it's yours if you need it. PM me.

And if by some bad luck you break that one, you are welcome to mine. I'm in Abbotsford.

so ...
getting back to the thread title.
nobody has rebuilt a 3B water pump?

Yeah I haven't seen anyone reply to the actual question. I too am interested in seeing how this is done. I have the 2f engine and it's service manual which describes how to do it (uses sst's from sst kit number 09236-00100 which is superceded now by kit number 0923600101). I'd like to do it with mine, if not for just a spare when I replace it.

I should add, the 2F FSM instructs you to boil the body before putting in the various bearings. The SST is used to remove them, how I don't know.

Here is the disassembly:

I just rebuild my 3B water pump with new bearing and seal for $16 and another $10 to buy paper gasket.
