3B rotary pump *solved**

Hi, I’ve got an 85 bj73 with a 3b that has a rotary pump. Just installed rebuilt injectors and deciddd to check pump timing. I own both the Toyota special timing tool with gauge and also the Bosch timing tool which I use on my vws.. anyway, I followed the Toyota fsm and get 0.10mm of lift with both tools. Doesn’t make sense… so even grabbed my digital gauge and same thing 0.10mm… ok I’m surprised she even runs and well! I marked the casing before rotating. Rotate it all the way to the head and can only achieve 1.14mm of lift. Slots are completely maxed out…. What gives? Any ideas? Maybe po did something with the pump? Also, there are three marks on my crank. I’m using the middle mark as tdc, am I correct in using that as tdc? Thanks all!
 
Ok, so went out this am to confirm what I did yesterday and still the same lift number of 1.14mm maxed out on the slotted holes on the body of the pump… so I decided to rotate it back to its original location since she was running fine before rotation and now the pump won’t rotate back to its original spot. I remove injector lines loosened the stay nuts and pump bolts. So when I first started I checked lift and I read 0.10mm and marked the body. Now the closest I can get is 0.44mm of lift . I can see lots of slot left on the body but it won’t rotate back to its original location. So weird…. I own a couple of vws with Bosch ve pumps and have never come across anything like this.. it’s weird. Any help is appreciated
 
Can you turn the engine over (i.e. so that the injection pump will turn over freely)? If the pump is not binding and you are putting sufficient force into moving it (they are hard to turn over) it can only be some physical obstruction.

Have you cross referenced the ID tag to confirm it is original to the vehicle? I can't imagine any modifications which would change the plunger stroke. All the pumps I have seen have a TDC plunger stroke of about 0.8 to 1.3 mm.

I'm only familiar with later B Series engines which have a single timing mark on the crank pulley, but you should be able to feel when you are turning the engine over to TDC.

Yes engine turns over. Actually I turned engine over with gauge in and I can see the pump is stroking. Hmm good call on checking the pump is tag! I did notice some orange silicone where it bolts to the block…. But the mystery still is why it won’t rotate back to its original marks… it’s weird
 
Solved-


Almost went nuts yesterday and had to walk away…. Glad I did, i regrouped and started over. Still got same numbers . So I looked at the timing marks on the balancer.. there are three and PO has middle one painted in white. I assumed that was TDC. I rotated engine and used dial gauge to measure pump stroke. And that’s when I discovered the third mark (when rotating clockwise) was tdc. So now second problem was I couldn’t rotate the pump back away from the motor.. so I took everything that was attached to the pump off only to find the metal clip that holds the injector lines jammed between the pump and the engine block (must have rattled loose at some point). It took a bit of convincing to get it free but finally got it! Shes back together and starting and running much better than before! No more black smoke! Thanks for the help
