When I press the priming pump on my inline 3b injection pump a black sludge comes out around the thing you press down is that normal?

I believe excess diesel comes out of there.

Keep priming it until it goes away? Maybe a more experienced person can chime in here.

Its time to replace the priming pump.. they dont last for ever and shouldnt leak - diesel coming out means air can go in. They are readily available from diesel shops. Source a Bosch unit preferably.

Strange. All of my 3Bs have leaked. Never had an issue.

Interesting! Maybe that style of pump leaks? I always replace them with the bosch unit when I come across them.

Do you have a link for the bosch pump or how I could find it

I just replace this not the whole module?

Correct.

There's essentially three pumps:

1. Primer Pump
2. Lift Pump
3. Injection Pump

You only have an issue with the Primer Pump.. here's an image I created for the 2H Injection Pump Assembly that shows the three parts - amongst many others. The 3B injection pump is much the same..

Ok thank I was lookin on line for the lift pump and couldn't find my same issue and was having trouble thank you for clearing it up.

Do you have pressure when you prime the pump?
I didn't and since i'm new to the Landcruiser and diesels in general i replaced the lift pump as per advice.
Only to find myself stranded a couple of weeks later with a partly blocked fuel system due to sludge and debris in the tank.
Drain at least the filter cup thingy underneath the car to check if any water and other contamination comes out.

I needed help from my Land Rover buddy so we got to joke about LC reliability 😁 But was able to limp it home after a road side work around.

@duncanrm Thanks in general for all your very understandable replies and pictures. They already helped me out a lot during my short time of LC ownership!

I cannot start it up at the moment due to having rad support and everything off but when I tried to prime it the handle leaks a lot and is rocksolid when I have the nipple open or closed

A couple of things:

1. With the bleeder nipple open on the fuel filter housing you should get nice spurts of diesel out with each press of the primer pump.

2. The "filter cup thingy" is actually a "sedimenter" and after 30+ years actually needs disassembly (remove float mechanism from top) to reliably clean, the little drain bolt is not enough. The sedimenter should preferably be deleted in fact and replaced with a combined filter/sedimentor before the lift pump in the engine bay. A few images of the sedimenter here -> HJ47/60/61/75 Sedimenter - https://photos.app.goo.gl/yTBd1qwecH7oP5L77
