Well my latest trip didn't turn out to be so fun coming and going. Anyway the Temp gauge spiked I shut it down and checked her out. Overflow was bubbling and the engine was definatly hot. I looks like i'm losing coolant (I wish the temp gauge was bad) I just changed the coolant recently and the fan looked to be turning fine. So I really suspect a crack in the head especially with alot of white smoke at startup. Oil looks fine.

I guess my options are:
used head
aus high nickel head.
3bt ;p I doubt I can swing the cost right now but I should considering what i'm going to put into this in the long run.

Anyone have a good used head.. It'd be my first choice to get back on the road quick.

Also can I swap in a 3bt and change it from 24v to 12v from existing 3b parts on my 12v bj70?

Thanks for the Help.

go buy a coolant tester and test the head to be sure before dropping big coil.
i have a 3B head here, shoot me a email at wayne@crushersrule.com if interested...

I'd go with the aus hi nickel option. It'll cost less than the precups would from the dealer. I have had tons of 3Bs (got 12 BJ60s from a bankrupt boneyard once) and about 2 out of 3 heads have cracks between the valves or precups that are ready to fall out. (or have fallen out) On that note I once found a precup that had broken loose from one cylendar and a big chunk of it came to rest in another cylender. Out the exhaust and back in again I guess.

If someone had a good head locally for less than $400cdn, That would be the only way I'd look at that option. My BJ70 has exactly the same symptoms and I have video of when I killed it. It survived ACT2001 but was killed by the Whipsaw.

Good luck

ok Question for you 3B head experts

I keep hearing about the OZ high nickel head, but in talking to Toyota the original head has been superseded with a newer one that is a high nickel head (from what I am to understand) so why go with the oz head, I do understand it comes with precups, but the shipping from Oz should balance the price, and why can't I use my old precups?

Thanks,

Michael

The OZ head is NOT a Toyota product, casting numbers aren't there etc. I've got one on my BJ60 and it's been fine for 30,000kM since I installed it. I put one on the FJ55/3B as well.
Good used heads are hard to come by.

I don't even want to know what a new toyota one would cost. I remember pricing one not too long ago for a 2fj60. I'll call monday and see what one is going for but i'm guessing it's the better half of 1k. adding on some maching work, gaskets, etc and a turbo. I guess I should spluge on a 3bt. I'll have to ask the wife. BTW what is the AUS source for high nickel 3b heads? Oh and thanks guys.. Tyring to keep my spirits up with my issues of late.

Prices on USA on heads and motor

I got my Toyota head for a little over $900.00 USD, I know Marv at SOR has 13bt for $6300 and that has less than 1k miles on it. I think someone in Canada will have one cheaper with more miles on it as well as used 3B head.

I hated to spend the money but I worried about getting a used head, it could be the old style head and already have cracks in it, just not leaking yet, so I went with the new head.

I was going to look into the OZ head, but the american $$ is weak compared to OZ $ and the head weight is high so I think it might be the same price in the end, let me know if you find out how much then are.

Thanks,

Michael

The OZ head is available through Geoff Walsh Engine parts. It WILL cost more than the Toyota head by the time shipping etc is all included. I got one because it's supposed to be better. If I'm not mistaken it was around $1500 landed at my doorstep in Canada.

The Allhead cylinder head will run you 740 Aus $ plus 450 Aus $ shipping . This is a bare head which includes frost plugs , valve guides , valve seats and pre-cups . Or 900 Aus $ gets you a complete head plus the same shipping . This was the price I was quoted back in November of this year , I did not go this route as a fellow list member here on the east coast sold me a good used one .

Does anyone know off hand the glow plug thread size? I have a 10 x 1.25 and 1.5 tap and it doesn't fit so i'm guessing it's a 10x 1?

The really good reason for buying the high nickel head from Aus is (aside from the better heat properties) is the fact that is comes complete with the precups in it.

Toyota wants $240 Cdn each, and at 4 Wheel Auto they are $100 each.

Craig.

Radd Cruisers has pre-cups at the best price yet.
There you go Rob a plug for ya ,
Daryl

well it its a 10x1.25.. it was tight on the tap :)

Has anyone used an Allhead cylinder head or know about their quality? I have been corresponding with Allhead and their heads are cast iron. They quoted me $690 AUD+shipping and that included combustion chambers.

There is some info in the DTLC archives @birfield.com about it/them.

ohhhh.... I just called allhead and the price for a 3B cylinder head is up to $1150 AUD. How did it jump so much in a year?
