I've got my head off and will be dropping it off at the machine shop in the next day or two.

The back story:

I had to head out to Banff about three weeks ago to look at and ultimately pick up a canoe I found in the classifieds. The weather was heavy rain all the way there and back which has nothing to do with anything. But it was raining. I was flogging it a bit cruising at 100 to 110km/h indicated (plus 10% rubber overdrive) up and down through the foothills. Drove the same way all the way to Moab and back. No issues then. So I get home and park in the garage and as I walk past the hood on the driver's side (left hand drive) I see oil streaks coming out of the hood and cowl louvers.

Opened the hood to find oil pretty much all over. The intake air crossover hose, the brake master, the underside of the hood, all of the injection lines, pump, water pump... All over. No visible source was apparent.

The next day I took her to the car wash and steamed it all down. In the 4km drive home through traffic the water pump was wet on top. The head was wet only from the gasket down. All wetness was confined to the front and below the head gasket.

There was no oil in the water and no water in the oil that I could see.

I consulted a few of the guys in the RMLCA and to a man they advised I just keep adding oil. So I naturally ordered a full engine gasket kit and a set of pre-cups. I have a trail ride coming up and I'd rather know whats wrong now than be a day into the whipsaw before it all went sideways. I want to see the condition of the head anyway and start with new cups. I hate oil leaks.

Indications thus far were a simple oil leak from the head gasket. But I knew it could be much worse. The truck has at least 185km on it and perhaps much more due to a stuck odometer. I got it quite hot several times but never boiled it on the way to Calgary from Nanaimo. That issue was eventually traced to a 2F thermostat being installed by a previous owner rather than the much different 3B t-stat.

Today I pulled the head. After removing everything else I went after the head bolts. If you go by the FSM bolt #1, 7 and 9 were not tight at all. In fact only a few (2,3,5,6) were really tight. I checked the gasket first and other than the front bit being oiled quite well the rest looked good. No visible cracks in the head. Some small ones in the pre-cups. No surprise there.

Barring any cracks found by the machine shop I would say my issue was the front bolt. The head design actually uses the #1 bolt hole as an oil passage. Having sat for something like twelve years and then being pressed into daily driver use for a month before doing 3600km to Moab and back I figure she just let go. In hindsight I suppose if I just re-torqued the head bolts I could have stopped the leak. Maybe.

LOL, yeah, we're dry here at my place. I'm 200' above the river. Cody however has the river on his street. Literally. Check out his thread and links in chat.

What you ought to do is polish and port head while it is off then turbo it. That way next time the head will surely be cracked and you can run a new high nickel one.

Peter suggested the porting but I have a bit of a time crunch. I am trying to head to Port McNeill on the big island on Saturday. If the road is open at Canmore.

I was out to lunch with a supplier of ours and was explaining to him my travel schedule for the next 8 or 9 weeks.

-Going to Port McNeill on Saturday 2800km round trip.
-Then up to Gibbons to arnott's (ratpukes) new place on July 6th for 700km round trip.
-then to the whipsaw trail and ultimately Mission BC on the Canadian Clunker Classic (first maybe annual) for 2000km round trip plus off road for a few days on July 12th
-then to Ruby lake Aug 3rd for about 600km round trip.
-then up to Fort Mac for the Tarsands run on Aug 30 for 1500km rounder plus off road.

So about 7600km in trips plus DD duty. Good thing I bought another pail of engine oil!

Not sure if its my laptop but #1 pic of the precup shows cracks.
Is it possible the leak is coming from the waterpump gasket and not the head gasket I have a similar mess happening on one of mine and seems to be from the top of the WP gasket which sits in the same location as where the head meets the block.
I have been told in the past that there is oil passages in the WP cover I cant say for sure since I have not pulled mine off yet to see for sure.
BTW I would change out that hose that is bulging that does not look right either the clamps are to tight or that hose is not OEM.

Yes, I think all the cups had minor cracks. I have replacements at the machine shop for them to install.

I thought about the water pump but after washing it down it was immediately wet again on the top of the block at the front where the block sticks out a bit from under the head.

I am confident after feeling how loose the head bolt was in that one spot I have found the source. The head gasket also showed what could be interpreted as evidence of a leak there.

It's been a whirlwind week for me. I am trying to get the truck done for a Saturday departure to Port Mcneill. I am delivering one of my FJ45 beds to a customer. I had to sand blast it to get off the flash rust and was all prepared to do that last Saturday until we had the flood here in Calgary. Yesterday I got the blasting done by missing a couple hours of work. The flood also closed the highwayand looked like it would add another 3 hours to the trip each way to bypass but the county/provence got one lane open.

I also am running 2800km there and back on 100% WVO and carrying it all with me. I had to source and set up a way to hold all that oil. I also had to wire the 42 for trailer lights and convert the trailer to 24V.

I dropped the head off at the machine shop and they said they could have it back to me in a couple of days if there were no issues. I call a couple days later and they had not started it yet :bang:. So the next day I stopped on the way home from work and tried to coerce them into finishing it this week. As I was begging a tech came in from the shop and pronounced there was a crack! We all went to take a look and there was a very minor crack between the valves on cyl#1. Maybe 2mm. Couldn't see it without the dye. They weren't worried about it at all and suggested we put a pin in it to stop it's progress.

But they also said the valve guides were over spec. The quickest place to get them was from an aquaintence of mine who lives 100km away. But he was going on vacation for two weeks and I did not know if he was gone yet. A little panic set in. After all the prep I was doing the last thing I needed was no head before the long weekend (July 1st is our "4th of July"). I really needed the guides early Friday or they would just move on to another job and I'd be screwed for this weekend.

I went home and left him a pleading message. He called back an hour later and said he had sent the guides in with his courier who usually does his deliveries before 8:00am:cool: :bounce:. I called the the shop at 7:00 and let them know. It's now 12:30 and I am itching to call them but that would border on harassment.

So while I had the thing apart I changed the gasket on the side cover. A real lesson in patience getting the old gasket off.

I also took all of the aluminum parts and bead blasted them before clear coating to make them all purty.

Anyone know if Shane reproduces this decal. Looks like a QC mark. Maybe they are all different depending on who QC'd the motor?

Good news. The shop called me at 1:45pm Friday. The head was ready. So I distracted the boss and bolted when he wasn't looking.

Home by 3:00. Engine running by 7:15 and ran across town to pick up the WVO form the trip.

Left the house at 7:15am this morning and after about 1000km I'm typing this on a ferry headed to Vancouver island. Nanaimo in fact. The same town where I picked up this 42 last fall.

Missed the 7:30 ferry cut off by seconds. Next ferry was 9:30

Oh, forgot to mention. No leaks from the head or side cover after a spirited run through the rockies. The engine seems friskier but its prolly just my imagination. Hard to tell when running on veggie. There is no overabundance of power at the best of times.

Wow... I thought for a second there you figured out how to manufacture time. That's a lot of km's! So why the veg oil? test? I've been pondering making bio diesel since it seems the wvo aint so good in winter...

Glad to see you got it all back together. How does the clear on the aluminium hold up to the heat/oil/under hood type environment?

Have a safe trip!

Veggie oil was available from a friend. I am seriously considering changing my BJ45 build to go all veggie with heated tanks and the whole shebang. Its just sooooo cool to fly by gas stations with $1.43 per liter on the sign. Makes me smile.

This 42 will stay all stock though. No veggie in the winter.

The clear is good so far after pulling hills all day. The gauge never got more than a needle width higher than normal but it was pretty warm and fully up to temp for 12 hours. Oil wipes off with a rag. This stuff is just Krylon but I had some "industrial strength not for sale to the general public" acrylic clear. Couldn't source it in time.

Given time I would have painted the head but there just wasn't room in my self imposed schedule.

Nice to see a real world test with essentially the exact same vehicle as mine. Is it washed or just filtered?

I knew you had a 45, but is it a bj or an fj that you are converting? I hate to admit it but to find a clean shell of a 45, and a 42 drivetrain may be my next project....

I have a 1978 FJ45 that I am putting a 1983 BJ42 drive train into. I also added a Marin 4.7 Toybox and a turbo. That rig will be more trail capable than this one. I recently decided to link the rear and make my own custom deck/ service body for it. 37" or bigger rubber. Roll cage and power steering.

Washed or filtered? You mean the veggie? Its settled and then filtered. I am building a centrifuge for myself and my source to use and get cleaner oil. I haven't researched what it takes to make my own biodiesel yet.
