Why anybody would change a go anywhere vehicle to a go nowhere vehicle is beyond me. The Landcruiser in standard form barely has enough power to turn 31" wheels and zero power to turn 39s...
Of course you can put 5.29 gears into the axles and increase the number of teeth by 30 %. With the small ring gear in the standard toyota axles the gears will eventually break off. Then comes the huge strain on the front axle, birfields etc. as well as the transmission because you cannot just reprogram shift points etc. plus the max. 15 MPG will change to below 10 MPG...
To each his own I guess ....:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

I dont know how I even survive on my 37's, let alone wheel it, let alone drive 85 on the freeway everyday! With, as you put it, "zero power" and on the verge of total destruction! I must just have a really lucky 80.

I hope my 80 is as lucky as yours as I will be putting my 37's on in a few weeks. :hillbilly:

I think its cause your 80 went on a crazy weight diet :D

Adan - Lacal PR Ironman Dealer has 38's and hes not shy on wheeling...

Im not sure is this facebook album is public or not...

I think he runs the Ironman 6" Kit and 1" spacers... and that thing is fully loaded with drawers and lots of camping gear..

He says he gets very little rubbing.... but my guess is that 39" would be just past the limit with no cutting or major mods

X2 on this! I have seen him and he goes everywhere.

Arctic trucks are actually made to flex. It is a common misconception that they are only made to go over flat snow. While that is their primary way to travel they do encounter huge boulders in Greenland, Iceland and slits in the ice they have to flex over.

If they can flex this 80 can surely be made to do it easily.... there are many people on this board running 37+ tires now and wheel with them.

Yeah my 3FE which has 70hp less than his motor can still turn my heavy ass military 39's. I do now have 4.88 gears but I ran stock gears for years. I can easily cruise 75 with more left in her if I wanted to. I don't know how I drive it let alone wheel it

My question is this

How the hell are some of you running 37-40 inch tires getting 12-15 mpg?

What gears are you runnning?

Right now I have 4.88's and haven't really tested the MPG since the tire swap. On 37's with stock gears I got 13.5 mpg as my personal best but since the 3FE is underpowered there was more throttle used than if it was a 1FZ I imagine after the turbo my MPG might go up a bit under normal driving because I won't be flogging it quite as much.

really I am lucky to 10 mpg with 37's and stock gears
The truck runs great with no known issues at this time WTF

I should mention I have an electric fan and not a mechanical one which helps out.

Are you correcting for the odometer being roughly 18% off?

To the OP.

Give er poop man! If youre willing to trim and dont end up with a hack job it might even look good. Personally I never understood why ppl feel the need to lift their vans 6-8" to fit 35"-37" tires. Its like they are following those cheezy charts you see in 4x4 magazines that tell you you need 12" of lift to run a 35' tire on whatever vehicle.

Also Id have to say that the 80 is gonna be easier to trim than some other 4x4's (in the front anyways). There is a ton of fender behind the front tires and if you cut the rad support there will be room in the front as well. The rear might get tricky but still doable.

D

I have 38.7 military tires and had to trim a little in the front. I have a two inch drop bracket in the front and rear which helped a lot. Running 5.29 gears and just recently change out the o2 sensor and now getting 14.6 mpg, before I was getting somewhere between 10-12mpg.

4.88's + 37's = Correct Speedo Reading :grinpimp:

I have 315's on my truck, and 7100 12" Short bodies for shocks.

Picture a 40" tire on my truck in this situation.... Not a pretty sight I bet. 35-37" tire with the correct amount of lift makes these trucks capable as all hell off road.

40's with barely a lift, not even close...

damn .. nice flex I'm always amazed with the amount of flex you can get from the 80 control arms and links configuration ..

It will wheel better and look much better with a 6 inch lift but I bet you'll still have to trim the rear a bit.

I am probably going to stick with 35s but they fit what I do with my truck.

More power to ya! I look forward to seeing what you do with it.
