my experience with projects, great race tire, bad trail tire, worst wet pavement tire in history...

haters gonna hate.

I love low slung trucks with big tires. I'm keeping an eye on this one. My guess is you're gonna need a wee bit more lift, and a lot of trimming. But it will be coolness squared when you get it working right.

As for too big, that's what she said.

nobody is hating, just saying it doesnt make the most sense unless you go all out and make it functional.

Big tires and a hacksaw doesnt make a functional truck in my opinion...

My next 80 similar idea, want to run 20" rims with 40" tyres, and use 14" stroke shocks, and run std height.

I am going to cut the floor, and the rear suspension crossmember, and raise them 70mm, so my 3" slinky long travel coils will sit us std height, with 14" of droop.

Same in the front.

Will move the engine back, cut the firewall, and chnage the tunnel, to balance the weight distribution, and allow some more up travel, by moving the mounts up, and once the radiator moves back, fit the gigglepin twin motor high mount behind the grille and go stryleside ute.

Will cut and tub the wheel arches to suit the tyres, but keep the flares and opening looking in proportion.

I have the 1fz, gearobox, custom clutch, GArrett turbo manifold to mkae a start, so when I find the right car, away we go.

WIll keep an eye on this thread.

I like where this project is going, you may force me to sell my 37's and trade up to the big time! Definitely watching this for progress.

40's are the new 35's!

Adan - Lacal PR Ironman Dealer has 38's and hes not shy on wheeling...

Im not sure is this facebook album is public or not...

I think he runs the Ironman 6" Kit and 1" spacers... and that thing is fully loaded with drawers and lots of camping gear..

He says he gets very little rubbing.... but my guess is that 39" would be just past the limit with no cutting or major mods

Nice rig. Off topic, but what roof rack is that?

Actually there are 2 racks if you look closely.

The front rack is for storing water containers and fuel cans, keeps them nice and tight in place, might be custom made, will have to ask him...

The rear is just a flat rack to hold the tent...

I think a body lift would help a lot.

Threw them on last night to get an idea of where to start. I plan to maintain some type of inner fender well and keep the metal work as pretty as possible. It looks like lengthening the rear control arms is a must.

I think it's doable. 39's only really need another inch of clearance over 37's, If I didn't have so much articulation, I could run 40's no problem.

I made my own edge on my front fenders to make it look and work like stock and the fender wells are just pie cut and formed to match (the pie cuts will be filled one day:) ).

subscribed! Your 80 has inspired me. I just saw a CL ad for a guy who does fender rolling/flaring for $30 per arch!

Congrats on thinkin outside the box man, interesting choice of tires, not my cup of tea, but regardless my hats off to you!

Why anybody would change a go anywhere vehicle to a go nowhere vehicle is beyond me. The Landcruiser in standard form barely has enough power to turn 31" wheels and zero power to turn 39s...
Of course you can put 5.29 gears into the axles and increase the number of teeth by 30 %. With the small ring gear in the standard toyota axles the gears will eventually break off. Then comes the huge strain on the front axle, birfields etc. as well as the transmission because you cannot just reprogram shift points etc. plus the max. 15 MPG will change to below 10 MPG...
To each his own I guess ....:bang::bang::bang::bang::bang:

I get 15 MPG with 40's and can turn them no problem. Drives fine. I can go anywhere I want.

My cruiser on probably the heaviest 37" tire/wheel combo not only has enough power to turn the tires, but has enough to tow my 5500 pound boat with the a/c on. And even with limited uptravel, wheels fantastic. I average 12 mpg, and have seen 17 on an all highway trip.

I like the rig on 39's, have fun with it!

About the only thing you're right on is the MPG, but meh, it sucks anyways. Lift, armor, tires.....they all take away from MPG.

^^ What he said.

You're really saying that there's no power? Not sure which tires/wheels Joez has, but I know I got darn heavy ones (hummer steel rims and military 37's). Like Joez says, no problem with power.

This engine is basically a tractor engine, lots of low end torque. Tire weight is going to be most noticeable at low speed, well we have plenty of power to burn there.

Of course you can put 5.29 gears into the axles and increase the number of teeth by 30 %. With the small ring gear in the standard toyota axles the gears will eventually break off.

Really?

Are you aware of how many people are running 5.29's? They're not a super uncommon one off item, a bunch of people are running them. They've been well established as an option.....and the "small ring gear" doesn't seem to have much problem with the gears breaking off (or at least it's not been reported on here, and given how OCD folks are on here, it would have gotten posted).

Then comes the huge strain on the front axle, birfields etc. as well as the transmission because you cannot just reprogram shift points etc.

Strain on transmission?

You're aware the these transmissions are used in 25 person passenger buses, yes? Which would be tons of strain since they see stop and go traffic, tons of weight....oh, and wait, big tires.....

Incidentally, how the transmission handles shift points isn't linear. In other words, if you have trouble with 33's or 35's, that doesn't mean it'll shift the same with 37's or even 39's.

I've had 31's on both trucks, 33's currently on the :princess:, 35's for several years on mine, and am currently running (the aforementioned) military 37's.

At least for my area, the tranny (and those non-reprogramable shift points) has done just fine with all those tires.

I personally like points it shifts with 33's and stock gears over 31's, and so far I'm actually happier with 37's over 35's.

TL;DR

Tons of people are running 37's, 38's, 39's, and even 40's with no problems. :meh:

37" pitbull rockers on TWF hummer wheels with rock rings. Significantly heavier than the old goodyears I was running, but quite possibly the best tire I have ever run in all conditions.
