For those of you with 36" Iroks or larger.......

Are the 1.5" Wheel spacers needed ?

If you had a J-spring or 4" slee lift do you need the wheel spacers with the stock rims ?

I only have 315's right now but plan on running the 36-37's soon. From What I know from having 1.25" spacers I would really go with 1". If I hit hard in the back my tires rub the inside of the finder flares, I have used my dad's 1" spacers and they seem perfect. When I was looking for info on here it seemed 1.25-1.5 was what people were running but I would have no rubbing with 1" and 36's with a 3" bump stop spacer..
hope that helps some.

Running 1" or 1.25" spacers will likely reduce or eliminate rubbing on the inside rear, but may increase it in the front, especially when turning with the suspension compressed. I'm running 1.25" and get some minor rubbing at the front edge of the front fender well with 315 Nittos.

The spacers could also cause the IROKs to catch the flares as well, if you still have 'em.

depends on the backspacing on your wheels, if stock a 1" spacer would work if aftermarket get something with a 4" offset and forget about it.

So the real reason is for clearence of the rear tires and the rear inside fender well.

But putting them on the front might induce rubbing with the outside of the tire and the fender.

Thanks.

Skim,

When I had my 80 at Slee's we ramped it, and decided to solve a few of the rubbing issues by adding the longer control arms he has, and then cutting the front bumperettes. Everything was bump stopped down adequately ..

Nothing crazy ass hardcore, but hey .. I'm a Starbuckian ffs :D

PS: As you noticed my inbox is maxed .. until I clear it you can always email. Thanx

Thanks Tyler, I'll give it a read tonight.

So in that pic, no wheel spacers ?

I'm about to pick up a set of those same arms from Clownmidget very soon.

I think I may the spacers on in that pic. But honestly I have been trying to remember for a few days. I DO know I took the spacers to the tire shop for an install BEFORE I went to Slee's and the guys came back and said NO GO. There was no way I could drive around with my previous OME lift without mucho rubbing. So I had them take them back off .. I would imagine I took them to Slee's for install after the lift, which would mean this shot includes them.

Peace,

TY

So on my 80 I am planning to cut 3" out of the front fenders for clearance and run a 2" spacer up front with my J springs (already have a 1" spacer).

It looks like the rear is the rear is the only source of concern then.

Tyler- do you have to run the rear spacers for the 36s to clear the rear fender wells ?

I would prefer to not run spacers, I could also run a 1" different off set wheel if the 1" clearance is truly needed.

I don't believe so.

Man, this thread is going to make me buy 36 Iroks alot sooner than I was planning.

Tyler- What is the maximum height of your garage ?

I have a similar concern with my garage door.

Oh-and thanks for all the info everyone.

Sounds like a lot of work, time, and money for a measly 1". And in the end, I don't think your girlfriend will be any more impressed with the 80 if it has 36" tires as apposed to 35". Just my two cents.:)

Don't get me wrong Skim, I am all for the "balls to the wall" approach to 80 modification, however, you still have brand new 35's on your truck.:)

There are some parts of the country where 36"s are the difference between getting stuck and getting through. I'm planning on running 36" Iroks also. So are J springs and spacers adequate?

35s have good resale value :)

I am going to 37x12.50x17 Iroks and my 35s have about 2000 miles on them.

This coming from a guy on 285s that have not touched dirt in at least 6 months.

That's the lift that HeloCat (Mark at MetalTech) is running on his 80 with 37" Iroks with MetalTech Style front fender trimming and lower bumpstops in the rear.

Ty- are you still using stock gearing to turn the 36's? Do you find the gearing sluggish?

You'd be hard pressed to catch me! ;p

Remember I'm at 650 FASL, and I'm light as a feather. So yes, I'm still original gears. I did install a Truspeed recalibrator thanks to LandTank, and I always turn the OD off for hills, and ramps. And I am always running in ECT on mode.

I love this setup .. cruises like a dream at 90 MPH, and with what I mentioned above it kicks ass in the city!

Mind you at 600000 feet, or whatever Golden Co. is , I was SERIOUSLY sucking wind. OMFG .. I think on one morning (the one where I actually got lost on the way to the shop :crybaby: ), I was sliding back down hill .. it was a lil scary! ;)

Here in Iowa our highest elevation is about 530 ft, so technically- I'd be faster than you.

Of course, that's what my wife has been telling me all along.

Hmmm.... New thinking material.
