well, No one was interested in buying my fj60, so I think I'm just gana ditch the crappy, tired motor and put a 350 in it. Who has done this? I've looked through the archives and have mostly found 40's with the swap. I realize i need a few parts from AA. I guess what I'm really looking for is a shopping list and some advice. thanks in advance

Oh, I want to keep the 4 speed.

Sure you wanta keep the 4 speed? Now is a good time to get rid of it! You have lots of tranny options and with 107.5 inch wheel base the sky is the limit. I would very strongly consitter ditching the 4 speed.

Are you wanting to do a Carb or FI motor?

These are a few things ya gotta decide on before shopping for parts.

Here is a photo of my 60 with a 1990 TBI 350. Very easy conversion with a howell harness.

Fj60 V8

I put a TBI 350 in mine. I think this is a grat compromise between messing with a carb and dealing with the complicated wiring and programming of the newer multiport fuel injections. It was a not very spooky swap and I love the new driveability and power. Downside is finding a complete TBI motor in a boneyard without a bizzilion miles on it is hard. I ended up getting a crate motor and then getting the rest of the parts from boneyards.

If you have a 5/85 or later FJ60 you can use the Marks adapter which results in no driveline alterations and only requires new front motor mounts. It's actually a pretty easy swap if you have a good place to work, can get/rent/borrow an engine hoist, and have some gearhead friends. PM me is you would like more info.

advanced adapters has a good publication on this very subject. it's $10.00 and full of answers to the very questions you've posted above...

chevy lt-1 or 5.7L vortec make for a sweet ride :D

Although if you are not already well-versed in major vehicle modifications the AA pamplet can be confusing. It's also full of errors about which engines can be mated to which vehicles.

I recommend the "Jags that Run" book about V8 engine swaps. It's not TLC specific but will give you an idea of what you'll be up against.

I was a little offended by the mine is prittier than USFSIHCs comment and had to make a childish come back. Sorry!

I have a 60 with a TBI V8; used a Ranger Overdrive from AA; that gives you taller overdrive (27 percent) than even the Toy 5 speed. Spaces the engine forward to put the fan right behind the radiator. I used the Aussie 4 speed with granny low (bought it from Specter), now have a little more crawl power and ovedrive also. This combo seems to work well. I agree about the TBI; best of both worlds and plenty of power. Buy a new crate one from Mr. Goodwrench. Slightly more, but a brand new motor with warranty.

LOL. Your comeback was no more childish than my original comment. No worries, I've got thick skin and a big mouth...

I am about to do a 350 swap for my 60 as well. I would like to have fuel injection but do not want to shell out major coin for it. Does anyone have any affordable options?

Sorry for the hijack!

I have a rebuilt 350,carbed, with the Etec heads, used the AA stuff to mount it, I would not recommend this if you or someone you know feels confident adjusting the bolt pattern on the bellhousing, they don't quite line up. do a search for 350 pics, and you should fine some pics I posted of my conversion, including the new crossmember.

If I'm going to swap the 4 speed out, I would probley go for some 5 speed. What ones bolt right up to a 350? and does AA sell something to mount it to the T-case. Sorry if i sound dumb. I honestly have new idea what Im doing here, but I'm part of an automotive club on campus and we have a huge garage with every tool known so I figure I can learn as I go and get it done within a few months. also, I'm a poor college kid so what kind of price tag am I looking at for the whole thing assuming good prices? I plan on pulling the egine friday night with some buddies. We are gana go ahead and take all the front body pannels off so it will be easier to get at stuff.

NV4500 would bolt to a 350 SBC. Very low granny gear and nice tall 5th. Kinda noisy though. A friend had one in his V8J60 and it drove him nuts. AA has an adapter. I have the Toy H55F in mine which I think is a more driveable tranny with the Toy setup, but you'll still need an adpater to the 350. I used the Marks and have been happy with it - about 10K on the swap now...

I'm about a 3 1/2 banana mechanic and I was able to swap in a V8 about a year and a half ago into my '84 60 and I'm still glad I did.
Forget that tbi / carb stuff and go with a 5.7 Vortec. Simple wiring and guaranteed fueling at any angle. Better Hp too.
AA will sell you every conversion part you need. (almost)
Then if you like to shift use the NV4500 tranny. Yes it's noisey but is geared better and can handle the V8 power better than the H55f.
It took me about 100hrs.
Don't over look all of the peripheral stuff that's needed for the conversion, ps, ac, fuel lines, center dump ex manifolds, etc.
Speed Seen wiring in Texas does a great job with the harness.

HEY DEVO,

post some pics of the Vortec if you can.....what year did you drop in?

We did our 60 a little different than most mainly because the info was not available as it is today. Back in early 89 with dropped a complete drive train from a 88 Chevy Burb. The motor, trans, and transfer case with the new center output we used a Dana 44 rear end out of a Scout II and changed it to a 6-bolt pattern. That was 176,000 miles ago and still running the original drive train. :D

Dogboy,
I've got pics but some how I can't get them to take on this site. (not smart enough!)
I bought a 5.7, cat back, with harness and computer out of a rolled '97 Tahhoho. Only 28k on the odo for $1400.00.
That was the easy part.
