Looking to put this drivetrain in a new fj40 project i have and wanted to see if anyone here has done it and any coments on it.am already thinking the middle cross member is going to have to go .

would run a mini truck axle...will get me a emergency brake option too

What size tires?

Your low range isn't going to be very low, but if you're running smaller tires you should be OK. Put a good cooler on the 700R.

I would strongly recommend against a minitruck rear axle. However, making a LC/mini hybrid would be good.

nothing huge,35s.I know Numtel on here is running a th350 with 205 with a mini rear and i believe 37s.I have a 10k cooler around here somewere .Georg had just that housing for sale a year ago...
I have another cruiser with a somewhat decent low range ,so not nesecerally looking for that in this.looking for more fitment isuses and what others have done

iam running a 350/700r/3spd toy tcase/and 203 doubler and totaly love the combo. what i love most is not having to worry about killing the motor when doing some crazy up or down hill stuff. also have stock fj60 axles kinda. anyway great combo

cheers

Are the 700R weak than a TH400 . ? and this is the reason coz you recomended a good cooler ?

sounds like a nice set up,but that is in a 60?you got alot more room in a 60
no they arent as strong as a 400...but they have overdrive

you can find the centered rear axles no problem. another option would be to narrow a d60 to cruiser width. i was able to do so by getting a d60 rear out of a dodge van and cutting the long side down to match the short side. that way you can run oem axle shafts; no need for expensive custom shafts.

fwiw, i'd run the 350-th700 with the np241c transfer case istead of the np205. here's why:
1) lighter
2) geared lower ( 205 is 1.96:1, the 241 is 2.72:1 )
3) stock gm adapter works perfect
4) plenty strong

you should intall a slip-yoke-eliminator kit on the 241 to gain more rear driveline length and more slip. you can put a 205 behind a th700 by running the stock gm cast iron th350-205 adapter but you'll have to run a special output shaft iirc. i believe the oem th350 output shaft will retro into the th700 as well but you'll have to tear down the trans to install it.

th700s are plenty strong to hold up to a rig like this lots of the comp guys run them and so do about ten million trucks and suburbans everyday...........

already got the 700to 205..went a different route then what you were describeing, cost was 55$ for a 2in spacer and a little cutting:grinpimp:

interested in other axle options,is the dodge a 6 lug?where did you get that axle last year you were selling?one thing about mini truck axle they are reasonably priced and easy to find

anyone ever try a nissan pathfinder rear?6 lug, larger ring gear then a mini, disc brakes already

Probably going to need to move the axle back too. My 350/465/205 combo left me with a really short rear drive shaft (too short). I ended up moving the rear shackle mounts to the bumper and moved the spring hanger back about 9 1/4". I still don't think I'll have room for a doubler in the future. At that point I'll need to 4-link it to get the axle back further.

Moving the rear axle back with the factory springs also lowered the rear end quite a bit, so bigger lift springs in the back would be needed too. My motor is mounted pretty far forward. I have about 1/2" between the pulleys and the electric fan mounted on the stock radiator. If I'm not mistaken, I believe the 700r4 is a bit longer than the sm465.

I was planning at a min to flip the rear springs for about 3in.Was looking at Dans way back hangers at Roughstuff to move it as you described.the tranny is 24",2" spacer and about 15"t/c for about 41in.atleast i shouldnt run into to driveline clearance problems on the trans belly pan.
So questions like is this going to clear the body?it will be getting past the tranny hump.also considering a body lift if i need to:rolleyes:

i'm aware of the techpak/fitzall adapter but i'm not a huge fan of this unit in a cruiser since it makes for a very looooong powertrain combo. using the th350 adapter would make the combo 4" shorter which is why i recommended going that route. even with the rear springs flipped you're gonna have a super-short driveline. hopefully your driveline angle isn't too bad. hope it works out for you though.
i am fairly certain that you'll have to run a body lift. the added length of the 700 and the adapter will cause the t-case to hit the bottom of the tub beyond where the tunnel ends. even with the engine way far forward, you'll still have t-case to tub clearance issues.

the centered rear axle i had for sale came out of nolen's rig; kate. i believe it was version 2.0
they're built by a couple of different outfits. i remember seeing an add for them in TT. any rearend shop that does custom axle narrowing or re-tubing should be able to build the same axle for you.
i still think that a 6 lug d60 would be a good way to go. the minitruck stuff won't hold up.............................

i like running the stock hangers with 55 or 60 series rear springs. if you run a 6" shackle then you'll end up with a 45deg shackle angle which imho is perfect. the 60 series rear springs allow the use of the larger diameter bushings which will hold up a lot better than the 40 series counterparts.....................special bushings to accomodate the smaller pin size are available from SOr and they're very reasonably priced. the offer tons of bushings for spring swaps. i use them almost exclusively except when installing an OME lift ( i use their bushings with their springs and pins).

I made my own engine mounts so I could put the engine where I wanted it. I put an angle finder on the carb mounting surface (to keep it at 0*) pulled the tranny tunnel, and positioned my drive train as high up and back as I could, making sure I left room to get the the bell housing bolts. One thing I wasn't paying attention to was clearance to pull the distributor out, but luckily, it just clears. I had to cut out a large section of the passenger side floor where the gas tank was, and had to cut out the factory cross member and a little bit of the floor behind the tranny tunnel.

After putting in new sheet metal on the passenger side floor, we built an extended hump for the trans/t-case and the factory tranny tunnel fit back on (with a little trimming around the shifters. This almost gave me a flat belly. The t-case hangs down about 1" lower than the frame rails.

You could build your own mounts too and lower the drive train enough to clear the body but I'm not sure how low everything would hang down. A body lift could solve a bunch of the clearance issues.

am not a huge fan of body lifts but if i have to i will.got any 55 or 60 springs laying around Georg??:grinpimp: maybe i can find what i am looking for at the petaluma swap meet next weekend:idea:

i don't have any right now but try jeff aka lagwagon or dan aka d'animal on here. they should have some 60 series springs for ya.
