Hi there!

I have a stock 2016 and I am on the fence between 33s (285/70 r17)or going up to 34s (285/75 r17). Anyone in the San Diego area (preferably North County SD) have either option that they are willing to show me in person? Photos can only go so far, but seeing them in person will really help with my decision.

From what I have read, you can fit 33s with the stock suspension and cannot do so with 34s (which means more $$$ with upgraded suspension parts and alignment etc.). While I am not opposed to getting a new suspension set up to fit 34s, I am currently satisfied with the stock suspension.

Thank you!
Evan E.

A suspension lift doesn’t change the size tire you can fit. Both will fit stock suspension, 34s being marginally more work because of KDSS etc.

I'll throw in another option that IMO walks a better balance than either size - 295-70r17. Incrementally taller than a 285/70r17 to maximize offroad clearance, but not so tall as a 285/75r17 which can start to compromise gearing and braking. Should drop in with minimal clearancing concerns with a good alignment. More width to compensate for lost handing and braking with a taller profile tire and higher center of gravity. Better bead retention when airing down.

There's several of us in San Diego that might be willing to meet up. I'm on a much larger tire which may lead to tire dysmorphia.

Thank you that is helpful. Assuming there will be work to be done with trimming plastic and removing the front mudflaps. Do you know of any members who have done this successfully?

Hahaha I’m sure the tire dysmorphia will be real!

I have not considered the 295/70 r17 option, that is good to know! I was previously looking at the following two options as I wanted to save as much weight as possible. I’m coming from a 2021 Tacoma where I had C load 285/70 r17 BFG KO2s and was trying to balance. Most of my driving is on the highway so stil trying to strike that balance, as I really enjoy how my stock 2016 drives currently.

285/75 r17 option:
Toyo open country AT3 - 285/75 r17 - 59lbs (C load)

285/70 r17 option:
BFG KO2s - 285/70 r17 - 51lbs (C load)

Do you have any similar recommendations for relatively “light” 295/70 r17 options that you like? Thank you!

Following. I’m in same decision mode as OP but with a 2019 LC.

@Evanike - curious what 17” wheels are you considering?

Trying to better understand the best tire size with no trimming or minimal trimming, while also considering wheel offset and wheel width.

Thanks!

Lots have. Start here

Remove front mudflap, massage fender liner, add a little offset.

I can look later but for the moment, I would recommend passing on KO2s. Great in their time but having been out for over a decade, there are much better choices now including the KO3s. AT3s are a great choice too.

OP, don’t know if it helps but I’m on 275/70R18s (33.2) and am located in San Diego. Would be happy to show you what’s what.

I just went this route 35x10.5r17 it’s a tall skinny 34 inch tire when measured. 0 offset wheels and some trimming along with alignment

I got the same setup as this fella here, but I have 1” spacers. I have a slight rubbing which I’ve been too lazy to address so far.

I’m usually at Escondido Cars and Coffee on Sunday mornings to check out the local rides, get out of the house, and see who’s building what.

Would be down to meetup and compare notes

Seen several Mud members there randomly.

What 17” wheels ya running?

Got the same setup on my 2018. Located in 4S Ranch area if you want to look as well.

Could you snap some photos for us all? Looking at this size too. What offset wheel are you running? Thanks! Happy new year! 🍻

Here ya go. @dudemancool1904 and I are running the same wheel/tire combo, but I have 1” spacers

I’m also on the Bilstein 1.75”-ish lift

Some research is needed before you buy... in summary buy the tallest narrowest tire offered which fits your wheel width and suspension geometry. Also lifts, wheel spacers, offset changes, and excessive castor negatively impact your ability to fit larger tires on IFS.

I have not chosen a 17” wheel yet, still rocking the stock 18” wheels. I have done minimal research (open to suggestions!) but so far I like method 703 or 705 (don’t know what offset to do yet - maybe something close to 25mm as I have heard that’s a good option to avoid KDSS issues?) also looking at Nomad Sahara wheels or even Evo Course wheels (very pricey though). Open to suggestions!

Any concerns with the weight of 295s? After some quick research, I can only find E load options in the high 50 lbs. At that point, shouldn’t I just go with 285/75 r17s since I can find C load options in the high 50 lbs as well? Thanks!

If you’re set on 17s I’d suggest the Icons that Slee offers

Or the Evo Course

Methods, although popular, are low quality, and I personally know 3 different people that have cracked them. Google Method wheels cracking. Yeah…

I’d prefer 17s and the option of Load C instead of E but I’m sticking with OEM 18” forged BBS for the weight/durability factor

Thank you for the offer! Could be cool to check it out in person! How do you like this option? Any concerns with tire weight/needing to regear?
