And a 4" Hell Creek lift with 33x12.50x15 BFG Mud Terrains:

It really depends on the width tire you want. If you are going with a 10.5" wide tire, you can squeeze them in under an uncut rear fender...barely. So, a 2.5" lift would work. If you have uncut fenders and want a 12.50" wide tire, you need a 4" lift. And I have kissed my inner fender lip with my 12.50s even with the 4" lift.

Good luck!

Bump

I am trying to decide between a 10.5 wide vs a 12.5 wide for my BJ40 with hydraulic steering. I will replace my rims too, so the rims won’t be an issue. The only issue I am thinking about is speed, and wear on other components. Does the 12.5 wide tire wear things oddly compared to the 10.5? Is the weight and difference in speed significant? I don’t reallly need to go over 45 mph, and I really like the profile of the wider tire, but I don’t really know the hidden effects. Are they both your cruisers? What significant difference have you felt between them (besides steering)?

My FJ40 has been wearing 33-12.5x15 for many years, even before power steering. What I learned is that you just need to vary the tire pressure to keep things wearing evenly. I run 21 psi front and 17 psi rear for best wear. This was before I added the winch up front but because I switched to a SBC V8 which weighted less the tire pressure seemed to remain the same. Power steering just made turning the smaller than stock steering wheel easier.

My ‘78 came with a 4” lift and I run 33” 10.5 tires with no issues. If I had to do it over again I would run no more than a 2.5 lift, same tires. Less is more IMO.

But if you want a wider tire you do need the 4” lift but the 12.5 tires will kiss the inside of your rear fenders, slightly punching them out. I went with 10.5, much better drivability and way easier without power steering as well.

Yea, I like the look of 12.5 but they may be too much hassle. I like the look of 4 inches of lift, but I am not sure if the 12.5 wires are worth the trouble. I may just end up doing 10.5
