what is basic lift kit (2" -5") setup for 315 tires. Is lift kit necessary to prevent all rubbing/trimming. What setup looks and performs best offroad/daily driver.285,295, 315?

Thanks.

The most lift you are going to get out of a 100/470 is about 2-2.75" in front...which is the limiting factor. IMO if you do not feel you need the extra height and/or volume of a 315/35" (for on-trail use) I would recommend staying with a 285/33" for maximum tire size. Going to 315/35", when properly set-up IMO with 4.88, front locker, etc. will separate you from at least $2,500.00 assuming you do the diff removal/reinstall yourself. Again this is my opinion...you undoubtedly will get conflicting opinions on the necessity of the 4.88 conversion with 315/35" ;) .

for snow, if you upsize the overal tire size, from a 31 to say 32 or 33, does the difference between a 275 and a 285 become minimal? I want to run 285's but i am concerned with snow traction, as whatever set of tires i get will run year round

Your contact patch will be different with 285 tires than stock. Generally taller and more narrow tires are better for snow/ice (unless you are going to be traversing deep packed snow...then a wider and taller tire is ideal...one that allows you to air way down). However tread selection, tread compound and PSI effect how well a given tire will perform on any surface including snow/ice. IMO 285 generally will not improve snow/ice traction...all comparative features being the same.

but over stock it wouldnt hurt to run a bigger 285 over a 275 in the snow, tread pattern being the same??

Assuming the only difference is the extra 10mm in width then the snow performance between the 275 and 285 would probably be insignificant.

295?

Wy not just add ½" more to the tire height? :grinpimp:

I run 295/75-6 BFG-AT/KO, and their load capacity is even better than 285's.... speed index S... run 40 psi front and 50 psi rear (+5psi for hot whether or high speed) to carry my 3T of cruiser... speedo is 1% too low, odo is 10% low but as long as you know it... mine are siped across to improve breaking on slippery surfaces, and I believe it does help...

...

as would the extra 7.5 mm of height (as the profile height is 75% of width)... this being twice that on a 295...:grinpimp:

All this gives less pressure per area on the tire surface, wich for some applications are bad (lighter vehicles, normal snow/mud) as you are less able to press the tire through the stuff for some grip...

But for others are good, if you need flotation or more free height under axels...

Now, if you need pressure on tire surface, a more agressive tire could help on that - eg an MT type. Due to larger voids, the pressure on what reaches through minor levels of snow will be higher.. Trouble is that a normal MT has no fine threads to grip, only large blocks, thus less vertical stopping friction, thus the total grip in snow is a lot worse....

Testing tires seem to say true winther-tire for most snow conditions, fine lamels and dedicated rubber type... but who wants to run those small 275/70's and their likes as they are the only ones available of that type... and even some of them are not that much better than standard season tires...

One can never get it all right...:frown:

I might try siped MT's the next time :-) .... anybody actually has expirience on this??

Henrik
