Thinking of moving from my current 31" tires to some 33"s. I'm currently still using the stock auto trans on my FJ62 but am planning to switch over to an H55 next year.
Should I change my final gearing? If so, what's the recommended ratios.
I think 62's have 4:11 already. I would regear if you had 3:73's. Look at the small plate under the hood to see the code for your gearing. The 4:11's should suit the h55 just fine with 33's. My 2c.
1. Get the new 33's & install them.
2. Drive around like that. You don't care that they'll heat up the auto tranny cuz you're dumping it.
3. Install the 5 speed and drive around like that.
4. You'll know after a few months whether you want to regear. Doubt it.
In another lifetime if I decide to go from 31s to 33s ill swap my 3:73 gears (FJ60) to 4:11 (4:10).
I'm with rosco on this one have you thought about 32s i have a 2.5 inch lift and it does not look under tyred nice blend of accerlation and braking performance don't get me wrong i have run 33s in the past but the fuel econ and such is more noticeable.
I have a H55F, 4.11's and 3F (carburetor engine).
If I go to 33's I'll completely lose 5th gear.
3F carb engine just does not have the guts for 33's.
Will have to go to 4.56 ratio(I think) to run 33's
Don't know much about the US 3F with the fuel injection.
I like 4:10 and 33's on my 60. I used 80 series gears(fronts or rears I forget) as they were free. milage is 11-13.
On my 82 fj40 , same exact drivetrain, 33's, I kept the 3:73 and I am happy in did so, the 40 is lighter and I find they preform the same, except for the top end.
If I drove alot of hwy miles, the h55 would be sweet, but I really just drive around town aND rural roads, so I dont need to drive 70mph+
That said a h55f is about the last mod I want/need to do to the 60, probably happen this next year.
I had 3:70's + 33"'s + H55 in my 60 with a good running 2f and was happy with the performance. The H55 has a lower first gear, so it worked well off road, but I'm not a crawler.
The 4:11 + 33"'s + H55 will be a good combo for you. Maybe a little low for gas mileage, but a good driveable set up.
6 years ago, I swapped an Isuzu 4BD2 diesel into the 60, and the 3:70's + 33"'s + H55 set up is drives really well. The 4BD2 peak torque is around 2025 rpm, and this combo puts 70 mph in 5th at around 1900 rpm. Just about perfect.
This site has all the Toyota transmissions and transfer case options listed with each gears ratio. Just add tire size and you campare two different ratios side by side.
I think a lot depends on the terrain u have to drive on a daily basis and your intended uses. R u planning on towing much?
If I was surrounded by hills and had to drive them regularly.
Then Personally I wouldn't go 33s
32s 4.11 H55F is pretty hard to beat if it's a Daily driver and work horse like most r here in Aus.
That combo keeps u right in the torque range at 70mph or 110kph depending where u r from.
In saying all the above maybe the 3fe may have that little bit more torque to push 33s than our carby
motors do. That I cant comment on.
My 62 used to have trouble doing 60 on the highway. 10/14, I bought it mechanically stock except the PO put cheap 33s on it that screamed down the highway. I swapped those tires for Cooper 33s. Much quieter. Still couldn't do 65 mph. Temp light comes on. Had a radiator leak. Replaced OEM. 1/15, Engine blew. Thought of v8 conversion. But I decided to rebuild the 3FE. 3/15, auto tranny starts overheating. Every.time. Called Georg and bought a good replacement automatic. Still overheats. Replaced torque converter and installed a bigger external cooling fan. Overheats on longer highway trips. Still can't do 65 mph. 10/15, rebuilt the tranny. Replace valve body with Rodney Nomad Extreme and swap in Heavy Duty torque converter. Wow. Huge difference. lockup is awesome. Still got hot climbing hills on highway. Install 4.88 gears and rebuild diffs! I am now cruising down the highway at 80 mph!! 3FE stays in the power band. Not once has it got hot!! So definitely regear when changing tire size.
The great equalizer here is the planned H55f. I've been driving the FJ62/H55/4.11/33 combo for years and it is centered on the sweet spot for this motor. Really, it's perfect so don't change anything.
If you were keeping that power robbing A440 which was exquisitely sensitive to tire/gearing mismatch, I'd have a different recommendation.
If your staying with the same gearing there is little reason to change the gears. It might be reasonable to go through it and have the pattern and backlash checked, but Toyota factory gears are about the best out there. One other option is to swap the front differential to the rear, since it likely has little wear and should still be fairly tight.
