hi guys,i have a mid to late 60,s fj 40 with 327 chev still with the original 3 speed cruiser gearbox,is a 4 speed box a bolt on swap to the bell housing or are mods required any help is greatly appreciated

Different bellhousing and different Transfercase unless you tear into it and replace some internals/shafts.

Lots of threads on this conversion in the FAQ and if you search.

:)

100% correct.

A GM SM420 or SM465 would be a direct bolt on to the bellhousing, depending on which bellhousing you have. This might be a cheaper and easier swap than the Toyota H42 4 speed.

yeah i was looking in the faq,was querying if bellhousing for chev to landcruiser gear box was different to stock in the case of 3 and 4 speeds,i was told by a cruiser restoration place in australia that its doable with out changing my bellhousing, just required something being ground down to make it fit, reading the faq on this subject suggests otherwise so thought id enquire so thanks for the replys guys, much appreciated.

so im left with 2 options,1, go ebay shopping for a 4 speed chev to landcruiser bellhousing or 2 stick with the original 3 speed,i was also led to believe from the same shop that the 3 speeds are better geared for the v8,but are weaker behind a v8 than the 4 speed he quoted me for a 4 speed and to do the swap which i thought was a reasonale price, maybe the bellhousing was included in the cost of the 4 speed, ill have to suss him

being in australia,im not sure we have ready supplys of the gm420,s and 465,s,yet the 4 speeds cruiser boxes are a dime a dozen,i have a rusted out bj42 parts car with the 4 speed out in the back paddock, but input shafts are different between the deisel and petrol 4 speeds so would require being pulled apart, not something im confident in doing so will just pinch the diffs and power steering and odds and ends

If you are in OZ, then you should have a Holden engine and not a Chevy. :D

You can get a new bellhousing for the toyota 4 sp from Marks, but you will need a 4sp from the petrol engine.
