I have been thinking about putting one of the Tundra engines into my 85 60 series. I have this engine in my Tundra and am very happy and impressed with it. Does anyone have any thoughts about taking this on?

I have called around to a few wreckers and can get a front clip that would contain all the wiring, rad, shrouds, intakes etc that would be needed for about $3000. I would like to keep the 4 speed or upgrade to a 5 speed and was wondering if an adapter would be needed to mount them together since they are both Toyota.

Maybe this will start a trend!

Looking for input or ideas.

Thanks

Dean

I'll repeat what my mechanic said when I asked him the same question: "Why don't you pick something REALLY hard?" He's done lots of SBCs & there's plenty of parts & info on that swap (saw my 1st 1 in a 40 in 1974 IIRC).

Rod Millen put a Tundra/LC V8 drive train under a 55 but the whole thing cost like $250-500K. Coulda had something to do with widening the body.

If, and only if, you had the entire drivetrain, it might make sense. then you would have a 60, with a tundra drivetrain. If you want to keep the stock 4 speed, that's a bad idea as any adapter would be custom/one off.

If you just want more power in your FJ60, any of the GM SBC swaps would make more sense since all of the logistics are worked out.

Someone has put an entire 100 series drivetrain in a 55 and it turned out really well. It was the entire drivetrain, not just the motor.

The bottom line is, it can be done, but only if the motor, transmission and t-case go as a unit, OR you use a 350 SBC.

I sure hope this starts a trend because this is what I would like to do one day!

It was a 45 wagon not a 55.

You need to do the engine, tranny, and transfer case. And at that point you may as well get it out of 100 series so you can keep your axle offset. You can get a manual tranny from a Supra to mate up to it. The gear ratios would be wrong for a truck and it would be very expensive and I'm not sure what transfer case would bolt up if any?

Thanks to you all, I didn't expect this kind of response so quickly!! I think might check into advanced adapters and see what engines they have kits for. I am just not a chevy kind of guy and was hoping to come up with something unique and yet still that would flow Toyota, if you know what I mean.

I had a teacher one time that showed us how to make adapters for engines and trannys and it didn't seam that hard. We put a corvair engine into a VW bus and I think a couple of other transplants. I was hoping that once I got everything put together, the hardest thing was to get all the engine controls and wiring sorted.

maybe I have a really bad case of cranial rectal disease!

4.7l w/ supercharger?

i would not mind at all doing this kind of swap,a supercharge engine would be killer.like somebody here said do a complete drive train swap.did tundra came w/ a manual trans.? just my .02:D.john

I wasn't even thinking about the supercharged version, the naturally aspirated i have in my Tundra would be plenty. They are rated at what 285hp?? The stock 2F is what 160 hp?? That would be again of 125 HP by itself. I also think the 2UZ is also lighter than the 2F is it not? Lighter, more power, I'm good!

I dont know..... Half a Million dollars sounds like a lot for any engine swap. Surely there's an extra zero or two here...

Well on top of the engine swap there were MANY other mods done to the vehicle. One such mod was widening the whole vehicle. It was a collective project so the cost for just the engine swap is just a part of that half-million amount.
