Has anyone done this swap? How difficult? Is it worth the effort?

I've searched the forum, can't find any references to it.

OMG DON'T!!!!!!!!! do some research on these engines, they have a lot of major issues. Besides there issues there built to power a rig half the weight of an 80,..... and even then i found they were sub par for that course.

My '84 mini-truck with a turbo'd 2L weighs in at 3800 lbs. My '93 LC stock was just under 5,000 lbs.

LC's are heavy, but few are twice the weight of a mini-truck.

With the right mods a 2LT (or equivalent) could do the job. I've hit the scales at almost 11,000 lbs on several occasions and had no problem doing highway speeds. I wouldn't be a race car, but it would be adequate, much like the stock engine is.

If you like replacing HG, go ahead with this option.
 
On my 2L, after 10 years at 17 lbs of boost = 0 headgaskets.

Just did a compression check last week. Everything is well within spec. I also completed my 4th cross country move with this truck and each time I've moved, I've hit the scales at 8000 lbs or greater. Although there are not a whole lot of grades between Colorado and the East Coast, I've only had to drop into 4th on a few of Appalachian grades.

I believe most engine issues are related to the driver not properly cooling down the engine. These are actually a really well built engine.

How many people posting on this thread have actually owned a Toyota 2LXX engine?

Ah, the 2L is a different engine. The NA L's are very reliable, but slow. It's the turbo that blows HG. Believe me, I want to swap a diesel into my 4runner, and I have looked extensively at the 2LT, 2LT2 and 2LTE, amongst others. Search the diesel section, ToyotaDiesel.com or one of the 4x4 sites down under and you will unfortunately come up with the same result. Does it happen on every engine? No, but its common enough that people run from them.

Edit- Adam, I read 2L, but you said boost, so you must have a turbo :) Consider yourself lucky if you havent blown one yet.
 
Ok im sorry, i can not say they are junk from personal experience. My knowledge comes from the massive influx of these engines hitting the Canadian west coast in hilux's, surf's, Land cruiser parado's etc. These engines have gained such bad press in such a short time people can not unload them fast enough, even at a loss. The head gasket/ head cracking issues seem to effect the majority here, and at one time people figured that installing the 3L head solved the problem. I have been recently been informed by a couple JDM specialty shops that the second wave of head issues has come around with this once thought final fix. I personally own a JDM 80 series Land Cruiser and will admit there are a few issues with there diesel engine that are considered common knowledge, however we tend to deal with them. So at the end of the day, I guess i should say do your home work, weigh the pro's and cons (there are some of bolth for every engine) and go with what you want and feel comfortable with dealing with.
 
I don't understand why someone who is going through all the effort and expense of a diesel swap would even consider dropping in an engine that is already just adequate for a much lighter vehicle? Not only that but the 2LTE would have electronics to worry about during the swap. By doing a diesel swap you have the opportunity to get things "right"...not just drop in something that's going to barely do the job.

If the 1HD-T is too expensive, I'd much rather go the Cummins route...my 2 cents.
 
I've seriously considered doing this swap with my turbo'd 2L. It came NA, but it's been considerably worked over in the 15 years I've owned it. While this engine would not move the LC around with "authority" neither does my stock 1FZ engine. The plus side would be twice the current mileage I'm getting and a whole lot of simplicity over the electronic and vacuum riddled motor I have in my 80 series. At 8000+ lbs, pulling a box trailer, I average 20 mpg. Empty at 3800 lbs I'm closer to 30. Since I already have the drive train available to me, cost really isn't an issue.

However, if I was starting fresh, with no motor on hand, I'd probably drop an Isuzu 4BD and 700R4 combo. More engine and an auto. I must admit that I've gotten spoiled wheeling the 80 series with an auto. So spoiled that I've also considered adapting a 700R4 to my 2L.

I'm a frequent visitor to the ToyotaDiesel site and I'm fairly certain most engine failures are due to people not knowing how drive a diesel, especially a turbo. If you are going to start hopping them up, you need to get gauges on them and understand what they are telling you.

Here is a pic of me at somewhere around 10,000 lbs. I didn't get it weighed but the trailer was 2000 lbs, truck at 3800, plus driver, plus 2 full pallets of sod and yes, I had dual trailer brakes.
