Just wondering how long you 2L-TE guys are running your oil and filters(?) I'm a strong beleiver in changing them more often is better but now am running a full synthetic and would like to get my $'s worth. As well the Toyota filters are a bit spendy.
What's your thoughts................?

Wayne ... Thanks for the Pyro advise.:) Did as you suggested and the install went great. Post turbo about 1.5" from the flange worked perfectly. Also installed a ISSPRO elec water temp gage and feel much better with that than the crap stock one. The new one reads 195(+/-) deg F as you would expect were as the stock needle sat about a 1/4" from the bottom of the scale. Seems like things would be pretty warm if that stock needle was peaking(?!):frown:

glad i could help.

i recommend 5000 km between oil changes, there are many on this board that are going further but as noted in the turbo thread, the maintainence is imperative to the oil feed of the turbo...

cheers

I've been doing a lot of reading about oils these days since a number of my friends are wanting to switch to synthetics.

I'd say your best bet is to run a really good quality synthetic and get your oil tested to determine your change interval. Much oil life depends on driving style and the additives that it comes with.

As an example, the VW TDI uses a highly spec'd 5W40 synthetic and has a 10,000 km change interval. Even higher intervals are totally reasonable as long as the additives and buffers in the oil are still doing their job. I would, however, recommend a filter change at your oil change interval half-way mark along with top up to the proper level.

The underlying thing here is that you NEED to pay for an oil analysis to find the truth. With the cost of synthetic, and the potential lifespan of some of these oils, the analysis costs are pretty minor in the long term.

I will likely be doing some experimenting with this soon... I just need a few victims willing to cover the costs of the oils and testing.

I cant see the point of skimpimg on oil and filters.
If you do one more or one less oil and filter change in a year what is it going to cost/save you, $30 maybe??

I believe there is something to be said for doing things BEFORE they need doing;)

i agree, your oil is your life blood. do the oil change

but then for those that want toplay, go for it and post up the results i know we all would be interested...
