I sent a sample of oil to Blackstone Labs for analysis. The results were great, especially for 392k km / 243k miles. Thought you guys might like to see it. TBN is a measure of the additives left in the oil. New oil ranges from 6 to 14. This sample was taken at approx 3k miles. A little fuzzy due to the file conversion but the bottom numbers show the measured mount of Antifreeze and water, in this case 0. Nice piece of mind for $20. 85 BJ70 3B

Nice.. gotta be happy about that moj.

Reminds me I really want to do Mine.. maybe i'll get off my ass and do it. :D

Me too...Running Exxo XD 0/40 Syn in the 13BT, and coming up to 5000kms.

Anyone know about international regulations on sending motor oil?

What about checking it in luggage for a plane?

I don't think that there are any labs here in CR.... but would love to test the oil that way.

Where is this place, do they have a website?

I believe Finning/Cat will also test oil for anyone. I will be phoning next week to find out.

YES Finning will do it for ANYONE. The "kit" is about $15. Drop the oil off at Finning or send to the lab. You'll need to develop a history before it is really helpful though. With a history you can see when trace minerals are on the upswing and correct as necessary.

Just got my test results from Finning. 5592kms on Esso XD 0-40 Synth. Just woke up at home after leaving last Thur for River Shiver, and for the life of me I can't recall if I took the sample before or after I changed the oil filter and added oil to top up...on Wed before leaving. Knowing me it is probably after the filter change so I could get the numbers that would be running now, as I am hoping to take it out to 10,000kms between changes, with a filter change and top up around 5000kms. I just put another 2166kms on since last Wed, so will likely take another sample this week and send it in and see if there are any changes: Long hills with consistant high EGT's.

I had no oil usage with the synth when I changed the filter, and no oil useage on this last road trip. I am really starting to like this oil for the 13BT.

You seem to have a lot more wear metals than MoJ did on his 3B eh, Greg? Is one of those numbers a TBN like they supplied with MoJ? I'll probably look it up at Bob's the Oil Guy when I have time, but I don't know what those numbers all mean yet.

Glad you had fun in RS '06.

I talked to finning lab this morning thiking the same thing, and told the tech I was going for 10,000kms. He said these results are golden and run it.

You sound like a city councilor that complains hiring 10 firefighters to add to the 40 already on the payroll is to large an increase. When you are already 100 behind typical sized cities...it's all relative :D ppm...

Tech recommeded getting a TBN as well. Costs over and above the base test. Going to get it from the sample this week.

I like the water, Fuel, Antifreeze amounts...

Well, finally got my used oil analysis results from Finning:

132,968 kms on my 1988 13B-T, 5,350 kms on Esso XD-3 Extra 0W40 synthetic oil.

OXI - 17
NIT - 36
SUL - 0
W - N
A - N
F - N
V100 - 12.6
V40 - 71.0

I am definitely going to be changing to Amsoil 15W40 for the spring/summer as the Viscosity numbers for my 0W40 XD-3 synthetic seems to be a little thin. Piers Diesel Research sells 4L jugs of Amsoil 15W40 for a very reasonable $30.25 CAD.

I'm coming up to 10,000ks on my Esso XD, and will be dumping it for the spring/summer in favour of running Amsoil 15/40, then back to Esso XD for the winter. If all my readings come back ok (will be tested every 5000kms) I will be running approximately 6 months on 15/40 and 6 months on 0/40 with filter changes very 3 months. Will see what the numbers say.

Hi Stone

Thats great! ..... But what does it mean?

Thanks

Hi GB:

Finning has some good explanations for UOA (used oil analysis) on their website. This page has Safe Wear Levels explained halfway down the page, and there's a section for diesel engines:

Cheers,

You guys wanna run your oil for a long time, check these out, by far one of the best setups going for a bypass filter, I'm waiting to see if it can be used with 24V, It actually burns fuel and liquid contamintes out of the oil and vents them.

Now thats pimp!

LT-6P (with filter) Price: 375$ cad. thats for a 3B (Still waiting on if they come 24V)

I would like to see an oil analysis after running oil in that for 10 000km's

Erik, sounds interesting...who makes/sells this LT-6P?
Anyone else using it?

Thanks

My results for 81BJ60 (with turbo) 429 000kms changed out chevron delo 400 15-40 at 4000 kms with napa gold filter.
