Hello My Diesel Cousins:
I drive an '88 FJ62 - 3FE with the A440 slush box. I'd REALLY like to go diesel when the ol' 3FE gives up the ghost. I did a search seeking some information on the 2H engine and was not able to find what I seek.
What I'd like to find out is: what kind of fuel economy (MPG) are those of you with the 2H diesel getting? My overall plan is to have a diesel engine (likely to include a turbo) mated to the H55 tranny. Will the addition of the turbo affect mileage?
How does the 2H measure up to the 3B for performance and mileage? Dollar for dollar, what is the best option? I would like to keep the Cruiser all Toyota, while simultaneously maximizing performance and reliability. Thoughts? Questions? Thanks!

The 2H vs 3B decision is basically a power vs economy trade off. otherwise they are similar. The 6cyl 2H is more powerful, but the 4cyl 3B is more economical. The 2H may be slightly more expensive since they are a little harder to find. I have heard mid 20's mpg for the 2H, upper 20's for 3B.

Turbo's are good: more power and sometimes even a couple more mpg's on the highway (though not many). Around town the mpgs may decrease slightly but not significantly, all depends on your right foot.

both will be about the same difficulty to swap in.

my vote: 2H.

If you are going to turbo, my vote is any engine that has piston skirt cooling, which the 2H does not.

Here are my experiences, based on a not turboed 3B in a BJ70 with 180k miles on the clock, and a turboed 2H with in a HJ60 with 30k miles on the clock. Both trucks run 33 inch tires, have H55Fs, the 70 is on 3.73 gears, the 60 on 4.11 gears.

Mileage on average (city and highway) is 24 for the 2H, 25 for the 3B. The turbo did not affect the mileage in the 2H.
The 2H is MUCH more powerful than the 2H, of course the turbo adds to this. On hills that I go up with the 70 in 3rd gear at 2800rpm, I can accelerate with the 60 in 4th gear.
What you are talking about is not cheap. a good 2H will cost you ~3k, a 5speed another 2, you can re-use your transfer case.
gathering all the relays, gages and switches, I estimate 3k. hopefully you already get an alternator, starter, AC pump and PS pump with your 2H, since non of these parts will cross over from the 62. If not, you are in another 2k. a turbo will cost 2.5k minimum. add all the small parts, add another 2k.
and this is assuming you do all the labor yourself. Obviously these are inaccurate numbers, but they won't be far off.
I am just done with a complete rebuild of a trashed HJ60, and spent ~15k in parts :), but that includes much more than mentioned above.

3B is easier to find part for right now. The 3B is pretty gutless, but the piston skirt cooling adds to the life of the motor.

Havn't driven or experienced the 2H

Both are good engines .. but always prefeer 2H ( 2 more cilinders .. ! ) and less noisy.

So without turbo you get more and better performace from 2H, I thought 2H with turbo 8 - 9 PSI are a good and reliable choice.

You need to have so carefully with 2H head and precups ..

There are thousands of cruisers in Australia with 2H motors running aftermarket turbos trouble free.:D Also the engine builders here all seem to have a different opinion to the Canadians as far as the two engines go, LOL I have never heard of a 2H being replaced with a 3B. Does a 3b last longer than a2H?? piston skirt cooling and all?:D The smaller 4 cylinder is working harder to do the same job under all circumstances especially on high speed[ for cruiser] LOL long distance driving in the heat.;p Our full size cruisers here were never fitted with 3B motors and the trucks and coasters that were always seem to be replaced with 2H or 12Ht motors. If you need piston skirt cooling fit the 12HT as this is regarded as Toyota's best built motor in this country. The 3B has the same head problems as the 2H as the design is basically the same. The 1Hz has head problems also, mostly caused by faulty thermostats and split radiators from poor maintenance.Any of the motors will last for over 400,000+ + with the correct maintenance and servicing. A lot of the diesel failures are caused by people who are not familiar with them treating them the way they treated old petrol engines.
