I have an American market 60 with a Canadian 2H in it.

The other day, I was just looking around under the hood and noticed that there was oil on the side of the engine block, where the arrow is pointing. This picture is taken from the passenger side, with the front of the car to the right. The oil seems be on the rear half of the engine, not the front and not on the driver (exhaust) side.

I'm not that familiar with diesel motors, aside from owning this one for close to two years now, so I don't know what all the other things are in this picture. I do know that there is no oil leaking from the filter.

My oil pressure is up just a tick, but still at the 2/3 mark on my stock gauge. It does run higher on startup, but settles in once the engine is warm. 6 months ago, I replaced the oil pressure relief valve, but that's not near this, and it's not leaking. I do not have any drips. The way the oil is sprayed on the block, I think it's something that heppens only when the engine is running.

Does anyone have any ideas?

Best,

Ara

I believe that the plate with the bolts in your picture (that's covered in oil) is your oil cooler, so it's possible that it's leaking... clean it all off with brake cleaner and see if you can isolate exactly where the oil is leaking from.

Yes a good clean up and then you can watch it come back. Looks like its above the oil cooler. Head gasket, valve cover seepage?

That is the oil cooler housing it actually has coolant circulating in that portion. The oil cooler is inside here.

Is the valve cover leaking? I'd clean it off and add some dye to the oil and recheck with a uv light.

cool. thanks for those pictures roma- never really knew how the cooler was configured.

My bet is on the valve cover gasket. Oil circuit in cooler is bathed in coolant. Oil will not come out of cooler. You should see coolant leak first.

Do you just tap off the cooler once the bolts are removed?
If it wont come off with your fingers, it wont hurt to give it a gentle tap to break the seal. But use a soft hammer. Or a thin blade can be used to cut through the gasket sealant. Once it starts to move it will come off easy.

thanks man, yep used a knife, nice n easy. Lots of fluffy rust crud.
got the head off, a broken head bolt gave me some concern, explains why the engine was so covered in carbon and oil. got the sump off too. Very dirty bird. Shall post some pics and questions upon rockers, valves and piston chambers shortly. Pvo goose drove through wet cement!
