Hi all

I changed my oil and oil filter and also fuel filter yesterday in my 1988 HJ60. Bled fuel system and went to startup and heard one slight knock followed by lots of grey smoke then it eventually died after about 10 seconds, however started fine but very smokey. Re-bleed fuel system twice more, each time was able to restart it and rev it fine for a brief moment before it stalled again both times. At this point we realised the primer pump was leaking and probably letting air in?

I have researched the threads and it appears these pumps go bad so I have ordered another Bosch unit. It also appears 2Hs can have problems relating to oil getting in to the valves when changed, potentially hydro locking it but surely the starter motor doesn’t have enough strength to bend a con rod especially since it started fine all three times.

My question is there a chance that I have bend a con rod or similar or more likely to be the primer pump leaking in air? I have never encountered this problem before so hopefully someone can put my mind at ease that it is simply leaking air into the system because I am panicking!

TIA.

Did you fill fuel filter with fuel before you tried to start the motor?

Yes. Then pumped until it appears air was out. Air getting in through hand pump I’m assuming.

I guess why did you feel the need to bleed the fuel system but I guess you got the lines
all properly primed. Fuel tank is full enough? Ironic if it was just not picking up.
If the Bosch pump is leaking shouldn’t it be rebuildable with a new seal? I’m not familiar with
those. I still have the original primer on my 12HT. Keep thinking of upgrading but don’t
have any rush

I’ve always bleed after installing a new fuel filter. The Bosch ones are cheap, easy to find and apparently an update from OEM. It seems like they are same on the 12HT and a common problem with both. The hand pump had definitely seized and required aggressive pushing and pulling to get it freed up, which probably caused the leak.

I guess I wanted to make sure it was air in fuel and not oil related.

How fast did your pour the 10L of oil into the engine?

Replace fuel push pump, bleed properly, maybe replace 6 glow-plugs, drive your boat!

1600 kilometers to Croatia, Hvar.

Moderately quickly with a break at approx 7ltrs. Heard oil can get into valves if to quickly. It started like it always has.

Lift pump is likely leaking air, its not hydro locked if its turning over. I wouldn't worry. you are long overdue for a new pump if its original. or even if its the second pump...

Yeah the old pump is badly corroded, but it’s a aftermarket Bosch. Old owner must have bleed it using a vacuum. That was my thoughts as well that it would not be hydrolocked if it turns over. Hopefully the old pump is easy enough to remove. Thanks for the your response helps me rest easier 😂
