For those of you blessed enough to have an early 2H .. you may have a centrifugal oil cleaner fitted.. a super nice bit of kit.

Under engine oil pressure it rotates at about 6000rpm flinging oil onto the inside ridged surface of a rotating cylinder. Each oil change you disassemble it and wipe off the accumlated carbon. It sits above the usual oil filter spot. There's two O-Rings that need occasional replacement (like every 400,000klm or so).. one outer, one inner..

The part numbers for the O-Rings are:

  • Outer: 15545-77010
  • Innter: 15535-77010

Here's a video of the centrifuge spinning wih the cover removed:

And some images of the mechanism and where it sits on the engine..

Nifty, can you see your dipstick hashmarks through your oil?

Years ago I removed a rocker cover from a Freightliner used to haul a fuel tanker fitted with a Cummins M11, to find the underside squeaky clean. Anyone who's been inside the top of an M11 knows they are never clean, usually they have a thick coating of sludge. The driver was complaining of a misfire so I asked if anyone had been working on this engine recently (considering how clean it was - like spotless) but he said no-one at all. After some investigation I found the camshaft lobe for an injector worn out. This truck was fitted with toilet roll filtration to the bypass oil. Because the oil was so clean it wasn't getting changed! The engine oil had a green tinge to it, that I haven't seen before or since, with no darkening from soot at all...camshaft was still worn out though.

Additional filtration is a great thing but not a means to avoid oil changes. Be careful how far you might be planning to stretch the interval.

Every 5000klms here.. and often 4000klm if we're off on a big trip that will see an oil change required whilst we're away.

A photo of one thats possibly never been cleaned.. a few 100,000klms worth of carbon I think (Image Credit: Richard Rose)

Yeah they sure catch the crud. Cummins HHP engines use a system called Eliminator that is basically a pool filter that gets back flushed periodically. The back flushed oil is sent to a centrifuge that has a paper liner around the outside which the crud sticks to. The paper makes it easier to clean out the centrifuge but there are still many nooks and crannys it get stuck in that take time to clean up.

Any crap you can clean from your engines oil during it's service life is good for your engine.

This is the only corner of the internet I can find info on these. Any idea what year they stopped doing them or where I can find the filter assembly? I bought a 2h to do an engine swap on a 1988 hj75 and the engine must be a later model like you said. The engine I bought is missing the spinner cover.

You can change back to a standard oil filter housing from an early engine that doesnt have the centrifuge.
