when i go to the local parts store, they all tell me that air filter and pcv valves are not available anymore for a 1978 2F motor. this is at o reileys, autozone, etc. do i need to be asking for a different year or different model of car that runs the same equipment?

Tell them it is a 1985 FJ60

Same air cleaner element, same PCV valve.

napa...pn CRB 29253 for pvc
FIL 2131 for air (wix pn 42131)

x2 i go to napa and the store near me always seem to have one in stock

That being said, go buy the parts from Toy and the FLAPS. Note the difference in quality.
Cruiser parts are built up to a quality level.
FLAPS parts are built down to a price point.

Jim - not to horn in here on the thread but you being one of the carb gurus... What kind of carb rebuild kit (1978-fj40) do you recommend? Toyota is not available, Napa can order the HyGrade 791b, I was thinking about the simple one from Kurt (Part# CA61025 - need other stuff from him anyway)?

The 791B will have a sec. diaphragm for the 78 carb. But it doesn't have as many copper crushwashers as it used to. Most of the washers are cardboard now.

The keyster kit does not have the sec diaphragm, but it has a full complement of aluminum crushwashers.

You pays yer money and takes yer choice.:meh:

So not to drag this out but... :)
The keyster (Kurt sells?) is $25.50 - and then he offers a "High Quality Japanese Aftermarket" Secondary Diaphragm for $32.50 --- Total $58.00.
[Edit: correction - 27.50]

I think the Hygrade is around $40.00

In your humble opinion (cost aside) - is the keyster stuff higher quality? And should the Secondary always be replaced?

This is getting totally de-railed, but...

The keyster has some good hardparts, like all jets, a better PV, metal crushwashers...
The Hygrade has sec diaphragm, viton needle, better airhorn gasket...

Neither one is perfect.

The secondary should be replaced if it is showing age (cracking). They fail after 15-20yrs exposure to engine bay heat & fumes.

thank you all for your input. i guess i never think of going to toy for everyday parts. i have gone to our local dealer before and the guy looked at me like i was asking for parts for the space shuttle.

by the way, what is FLAP?

I second that. They tell me I'm missing numbers in my vin.

Got a really good carb rebuild kit from Rock Auto for my 77. It has a mix of aluminum and paper gaskets with a diaphram included, it was a small one(is that the secondary). cost of the rebuild kit was less than $11. Had everything I needed
