the 60 has been sitting for almost a year, with various problems, none pertaining to the engine.

put a clutch in not long ago, just wrapped things up today. and tryed to start it. it always started hard.

it cranked and cranked and cranked then sputtered to life, ran 5-10 seconds and quit, tryed restarting.

and it cranked like all the spark plugs were removed(no compression). crawled under it and spun the fly wheel by hand. it has NO compression at all. when spun by hand, the flywheel almost keeps going(ok not that bad, but not far from it).

it made NO funny noises, no clanks, pops, snaps or cracks. turning it over with the starter makes no unusual noises, no grinding, nothing. and turns quite freely.

what let go? un-believable timimg on it's part...
Oh and it ran fine before pulling the tranny, last year...

tomorrow the valve cover comes off....

The valve train should give you a pretty solid clue as to what's going on. If the rockers/valves are moving, try doing a compression test. Add some oil to each cylinder since it has been sitting so long.

With the flywheel moving that much -I almost hate to suggest it- but maybe a crankshaft failure?

the crank spins on the front end, all though i have'nt tryed to spin EACH end seperatly.

compression check is pointless. spining the flywheel i can NO compression. there is no change in the effort it takes to turn it over by hand.
we spun it by hand several times over the winter, and during the install of the tranny, all times you could feel the compression strokes.

while cranking it with the starter, putting your hand over the top of the carb. there is VERY little vacum pull.

seems like the cam broke, or some type of trouble with the cam/crank gears.

observing the valve train tomorrow should shed some light on it, but i'm sure that i don't want to "see" the problem.
this project was wrapping up, and i was looking forward to getting it back on the road, so much for that plan...

If you haven't adjusted your valves, or at least made sure that they're closing fully, it would do that. Bring the timing mark to the window, get #1 to TDC in the compression stroke, with the dist. rotor pointing to #4 cylinder (per FSM) and check clearance under #1 intake and exhaust rockers, should be .008 for former, .014 for the latter. But you said it ran fine when you parked it, and that you haven't modified anything under the hood, so it makes me doubt that your valves could be THAT far out of spec (so it won't close at all).
As for the running, have you heard of Jim C, the carb guy in OH? he's the master aisan carb exorcist. That alone could get you a sweet running 60 back to you. Good luck tho!
