2f or not 2F?

@Full Throttle 500 Good to see another Houston member and even with an FJ60!

I like the idea of V8's, but my 2F can run with the best of them albeit a little slower.

Interesting roof rack and paint on that rig. Looks like it was originally brown paint?

The guy I got it from used a spray can to paint it tan. It was originally blue. The roof rack is one of the many items to be replaced.
What part of Houston you in klinetime574? I am down by Ellington.

Okay so the easy part is done. After days of reading forums and searching the Internet along with Internet searches and talking to custom builders lime TLC4x4, I now have a game plan and the setup has been chosen.

Here is what the build goal is for the 60:
6.0 LS
4l65E 2 wheel drive transmission with an adapter
New transmission cross member
Stock transfer case
2.5" OME Heavy duty lift
OME shackle flip kit
Steel braided brake lines
Slotted front rotors
Griffin radiator
ARB roof rack
Rooftop tent
Rear bumper with tire gate
Front bumper with winch
Rock slider side rails
All new lights converted to LED
35's on aluminum wheels
38 gallon fuel tank
Holley in line EFI fuel pumps
And.....
Alot of overtime at work to buy parts

Thanks to everyone for your input, it has been extremely helpful and greatly appreciated. I know there are those that love their 2F, but I love horsepower and I plan on driving this thing daily and taking long trips in it. Hopefully Moab one day. I'll post the build process as I go. She my take awhile but should be an awesome and run rig in the end.

I'm a few miles West of Hobby Airport, might be pretty close to you lol.

The build list looks good. Especially the 6.0! Your rig was prolly the same color as mine then. Color code 861 Light Blue Metallic.

Familiarity & most gm vehicle's with the 6.0 have 4l65e unless it is a 2500 & larger. I will also be pulling a trailer occasionally. For me and my use of the truck, this made the most sense.

May want to look into adding rear disc brakes if you're going to be towing a lot. HP don't mean nothing if you can't stop it.

Easiest option there (In my mind) is to install an 80 Series Full Float rear axle with or without factory locker, your choice, rear discs either way.

I talked to TLC4X4 about the brakes since they build 60's on a regular basis with the 6.0. Was told upgrading the rear to disc is a waste of money. Which makes since as the front does 80% of the stopping. I am upgrading the front. The back brakes will be completely rebuilt when I rebuild the rear axle and upgrade the axles with chrome moly shafts. It also helps that the trailer has brakes on all four wheels. The trailer is for when I take my car to the track.

Love the old school, big motor under the bonnet I presume? lol

Take this with a grain of salt, but slotted rotors ain't gonna do anything. Especially when running 35" tires. The trailer brakes will help, but driving slow is the answer when towing anything with these.

It is a 55 ford fairlane with a 427 stroker pushing 680hp with out the 200 shot Nitrous.

The brake upgrade will be a little more than just slotted rotors. But taking it easy is the key when pulling any trailer no matter what you are pulling it with. My wife will be happy when I am not swiping hers to tow something. :)

I obviously can't tell old cars lol.

I'll be curious to see what you do with the brakes. AFAIK there isn't much in the brake upgrade department for these things. Other than the 4Runner upgrade, but I'm not totally convinced on that one.

Tundra brakes and 17" wheels, larger torque from bigger rotors should mean better braking...at least that's the theory...

When you get the 60 off road, the 2F makes sense. Especially with the 5 speed tranny. You don't need anything else. On road, well....hope you're not in a hurry.

I had never seen the Tundra Brake Upgrade mentioned or the Front Range Off Road Kit which was designed for Tacoma parts.

This looks like the way to go honestly.

See this post and follow to the next page for more photos. Some Pics From Tonight - baxter650

How come this kit is not mentioned much at all? It makes the front end more serviceable, and we get better brakes. Not to mention more tire choices (relatively speaking) when going to a 17" wheel versus a 15" wheel. It also widens the track width. Yes this will reduce turning radius, but our wheel choices should increase. See This Post Here which has some more data.

Interested to see how you go about this with the 6.0... With reality setting in and the fact that I know my 2F will not last forever and the want vs need of swapping to an engine that will almost definitely get better gas mileage and driveability I have been looking at this from the perspective of a "budget friendly" build (aka I would be doing the work mostly myself).

Curious as I have always heard people say to throw an SBC into the truck that has TPI/TBI for "budget friendly" but I am starting to see more salvage yards, like @NCFJ said, that are selling these engines at very reasonable cost. You seem like you know your way around Chevy engines so what is the benefit, other than technological updates, of going with the vortec vs. an SBC if you are on an extreme budget?

I am on an extremely tight budget. My first reason is not the until cost but the cost and availability of parts later. The second reason is I use the truck as a daily driver. Third being I priced out all of the performance parts for the 2f and wold be close to 7 grand in just the engine, still have a 2F, have to run it on race fuel blend and still be under 200hp. A LS has twice the torque and almost three times the HP for less than half the cost. More dependability and close to 18 mpg with a proper tune. Keeping the budget in mind, as much as I did not want to I will be switching to an automatic. A LS to Toyota trans adapter is 1500 to 1800. A 4l65E to Toyota transfer case adapter is 800.
If I stay standard I would have to go to a 5 speed to gain what I am looking for. I don't go into just the rocks and hills. I go into the nice Texas black gumbo which requires wheel speed. This was another factor.
To keep the budget in check I am looking for a Chevy with a 4l65E transmission that runs and drives. This gives me everything I need for the swap minus the adapters and engine mount kit.
The ultimate swap would be to put my body on a 97 or newer FJ80, but that opens a whole new can of worms I don't want to get into.
Back to the 6.0, I found that most of the vehicles with the tray I need are SS models, Escalade, Hummer and these are not cheap. Then I found if I look for a chevy or gmc truck with the 6.0 that is not an HD I will get everything I need.
The other option is to get a 4 wheel drive chevy and use a NP205 transfer case, this will give me a right hand drop Tcase that is gear driven.

As far as benefits of a LS. The aftermarket parts are abundant. They have gotten cheaper, as low as 500 with a harness. If you get a LS1 you are looking at 320 to 350 horsepower stock. You can put an LS6 stock cam with lifters in one, keep your torque band low, and be at 400 to 415hp with a proper tune. You can find LS6 cams on ebay that guys pull out of their car as soon as warranty is up and the cam is still good.

Also if you go with an all aluminum LS you will cut down on the weight. Like any swap, there is alot of work involved. But what I have found on this forum there are alot of guys willing to help were they can.
