Hello Guys,Newbie here
I am rebuilding a 78 2F for the first time and have a question about the head Gasket.I bought the rebuild kit from JT Outfitters, and so far all has gone smoothly. My concern is that some of the holes in the block (water jacket) do not have corresponding holes in the head gasket. The one I took off came off in layers and was deteriorated,so I discarded of it,wish I would have kept it now to reference it.Does anyone have a pic of which holes are supposed to be open, and which are not, even a pic of a head gasket that is known to be correct.I know that this head gasket may be correct, but want to be certain before proceeding.Thank you

The gasket hole configuration has change a bit through the years, mostly restricting flow to the front section of the engine.....

I'm a little leery of the quality of some of the parts JTO sells as they tend to buy cheap........you don't want to skimp on head gaskets, unless you don't mind doing it over.......

Best thing would be to post a pic of your gasket laying fitted on the block.......

Another option is to pick one up at your Toyota dealer to compare it to. Slight delay in the work but might be worth it.
A big X2 on that /\

On any 2F, make sure the HG matches the head. IOW, if using a 1986 head on a 1975 block, order a HG for a 86.

thanks for the feedback guys.I am certain the block is a 78,have checked the numbers, how do I tell the year of the head?where are the numbers stamped? Thanks again

I had my brother check the numbers on the head, and this is what he found on the intake/exhaust side of the head
8 61031 0201

I am assuming that the 8 is year?
what is confusing to me is that the engine kits cover from 75 to 84 .Your help is greatly appreciated.

Now days there is only one gasket that fits 1/'75 ~8/'87..........thats it........

Whether your is correct remains to be seen......

You are aware that the head gasket goes on only one way and that it should be marked with an arrow and a "F". If you put it on upside down it will block the oil passage to the head - not good.

The gasket is virtually impossible to install backwards unless the tattletale tag that hangs off the back is trimmed off.........

A simple search of this forum site will show you that it does happen. Given that the gasket will easily fit either way does not make it virtually impossible. Sorry, I disagree with you. There are mechanics with little 2F engine experience that have made this error.

So if you simply flip the gasket the push rods will still find a home" I don't remember seeing a multi-hole combination on my gasket.:hhmm:

Yes, the head date code is split up by the casting number.

date code 8 0201 translates to 1978 feb. 1st.
